Speek Greek and the locals will like you.
by Tourtech
It seems that english speaking tourists always think that the locals can speak english but choose not to. Fact is when travelling outside of english speaking countries, it is important to try and learn about the local language and customs. If you can learn a bit of the local tongue, you will be less likely to be ripped off. You may even get a free drink or added assistance for the effort.
Here are som basic ones:
Thank you > pronounced: Ef-car-isto
Cheers> Pronounced: Yai-mas
Please/Your Welcome>
Pronounced: Para-Kalo
(said in response to Ef-car-isto)
The Bill> Pronounced: Ton-lo-gar-iasmo
Hello> Pronounced: Ya-Soo
Good night> Pronounced: Kali-spera
This may not be completly accurate because greek sounds like greek to me, but everyone did respond as we would have expected from these words. And we did get a few free drinks and less hassle from the cabbies.
Good luck!
Ayia Solemni
by leics
A massive 'raggy' tree overshadows the catacombs and shrine of Ayia Solemni, on the right-hand side of Apostolou Pavlou as you walk from the harbour area. It doesn't look particularly interesting (or salubrious) so I suspect it is frequently missed by visitors.
The steps lead to several chambers, one of which is now a shrine to a Jewish mother martyred by one of the kings of Palestine. Before it became a shrine it is thought the chambers were a synagogue during Roman times, and probably existed as a shrine before that.
One of the chambers has the remains of some frescoes, first damaged by the Crusaders and in very poor condition. Another holds votive offerings, icons and candles, whilst a third leads down some steps to a sacred well.
Worth exploring, though take care on the badly-worn steps.

Greek Taverna
by clouds111 about Hondros
A nice Cypriot typ taverna serving traditional local food at reasonable prices. There always seemed to be a crowd of people here so that's a good sign. The tables are set under a canapy of vines so it's quite a nice setting. The food is really tasty and service is good although waiters lack a few smiles. Kleftiko
mosaics
by Dick33
The mosaics at Pafos are fantastic I din't expect so many and for them to be in such good condition, we spent most of an afternoon here.
It was also really cheap to get in I can't remember how much exactly but I think it was about a pound.
