Christmas in Prague

by oRi_5

Hi,

My husband and me are considering spending Christmas in Prague from the 24th-29th. How do people celebrate Christmas there? Will there be any festivities outside? Will shops, museums and other places to visit be open if not on Christmas day at least on the following days - Saturday and Sunday?

Many thanks

City will be nicely decorated and enlightened, that's for sure
I remember when we were there (2000), it was for New Year and shops and restaurants were open on January 1st but they just started working later than usual

St. John Nepomuk will help keep your secret

by Barton1968

When walking across Charles Bridge you will notice that certain statues have brass reliefs which depict events in Czech history. Local custom dictates that touching part of the relief will bring some form of luck.

Touch the statue of St. John, here being thrown from the bridge and think of the secret you do not want revealed.

The original stronghold

by rexvaughan

We probably would not have found this place had it not been for the son of one of our neighbors who had been an international university student in Prague and suggested we visit. He had evidently lived and studied at Vysehrad and the area. It is a wonderful complex and not on the beaten tourist path. There are also great views of the city and surrounding area from this high vantage point.

This high stronghold overlooking the Vltava River has been here since the late 11th C. It was the site of the original castle which is no longer there and a church which is. It is a pretty quiet and peaceful place and we saw no other tourists as we wandered the lovely landscaped gardens inhabited by some huge and wonderful statues depicting figures of Czech Mythology. Many of Prague's great artists, scribes, musicians and politicians lie buried in the cemetery adjacent to the church. Most notable are the graves of Dvorak, Smetana and Mucha.

If you go, take the metro to the Vysehrad stop. I decided it looked more accessible from the river side so we took a tram, got off and had trouble even finding an access point. When we finally did, it required our walking up hundreds of steps.

Cernin palace (Cerninsky palac)

by Jarin

This palace is built in 1668 for count Czernin, emperor's ambassador in Venice and is 150 m long.
After the family Czernin sold it, first it were barracks, and after that, from 1918, it was ministry of Foreign affairs.
