Staying in an old monastery
I had a most enjoyable stay in the place that used to be a Benedictine monastery. There were a few things that I appreciated about the hotel.
Firstly, the rooms were really spacious. The twin room that we got on the ground floor was big enough to accommodate a sofa, a dressing table and another table with two chairs. It had a private hall with a separate entrance/exit leading onto the yard, equipped with a wardrobe and a coat hanger, so we could keep all the luggage outside the room. The bathroom (the size of the room) had an exercise bicycle and a sauna in it! - a luxury that our friends occupying a room opposite didn't have.
The place had a unique architecture, high, vaulted ceilings added character to the rooms.
Another good thing was location. Not far from the centre, yet in a quiet and green area - or so it seemed, when we were booking. The peace-and-quiet part, however, was missing on the day when we arrived. Imagine our shock when on arrival we found the drive leading to the hotel blocked and the area around turned into a funfair with flashy rides, deafening music, food and drink stalls all around. We were on the point of leaving when, fortunately, the security guards of the funfair helped us out. Within 3 minutes our car got a police escort and we were convoyed through the crowd right to the hotel's gate, celebrity style. Luckily, It turned out that the wall surrounding the hotel blocked out most of the noise and once we got inside not a sound from the funfair was heard.
However, It was only on the last day of our stay that the funfair disappeared and we could contemplate the true, peaceful atmosphere of the whole monastery complex.
What else did I like about the hotel? It advertises itself as an eco-hotel. For example, instead of a single rubbish bin in a room you get three, separate containers for paper, plastic and I think metal, discretely hidden in a wooden casing. You can read about the hotel's eco-policy on their website.
I found the staff friendly and helpful. I liked the place very much and I’d be happy to stay there again if I had a chance.
