Planning a trip to Eastern Europe next April or May. We will be Flying to Berlin and taking the train to Prague-Budapest-Vienna-Munich. What can I expect with the weather and will the leaves be returning to the trees by then. Will any flowers be blooming Etc.

by christine.j

I cannot tell you about the weather next April or May, but I can assure you that the leaves will be back and all the spring flowers will be blooming. In fact, late spring, May especially, is one of the nicest times in the year.

Have a look at the climate averages tables to get a rough idea of what to expect:

Prague http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT003480

Budapest http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT003870

Vienna http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT003350

Munich http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT003680

Berlin http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/world/city_guides/results.shtml?tt=TT003650

It will be a lovely time to visit, imo. Leaves and flowers to be seen in all places.

End of April- May is the best time for a visit. Of course there are variations each year, but usualy end of April is at least +18-20C during the day. Several times in recent years April/May break was with +25C and sunny wonderful weather. Blooming starts mid-April, sometimes earlier....

The later you go the better chance for leaves on the trees, and of course, the south side will have more then the north. However, you have to change the definition of your trip, Budapest is the most Eastern town on your list and that is about the Central of Europe. If you want to see the real east, maybe you should go to Minsk ;-)

I was in Prague the first week of May last year and it was very nice. I wore shorts and a t-shirt most of the time. The weather was high teens to low twenties celsius. It is also a good time to travel there as it is before the big tourist push so lower prices and less crowds. One of my favorite places in Europe so far.

Travel Tips for Prague

Language Confusion

Too many things have changed in Prague to make and meaningful comment. However . This was the first slavic language country that I went too , and the first country where the language caused confusion. Had no problems with other countries where it was possible to grasp a few words quickly and then try to expand your vocabulary . Maybe the problem was that the stay was only four days . It was still an enjoyable stay . We used to eat at a fast food restaurant . There was a menu posted in Czech only. So what we did was watch what the fellow in front of us pointed to , and then pointed to the same thing ( no talking ) .Sometimes the fellow in front of us delayed his decision , and the attendant would then ask us what we wanted ( in Czech ) . This is when our plan went off the rails . So always learn a few basic words of the native language to get a foothold in a country .

Although Prague is a former Communist state still suffering terribly from the effects of pollution from that era, Prague is still making impressive efforts in turning tha legacy around...

In fact one could say that this former East Bloc environmental bad boy is putting countries like the US and UK to shame. It felt good throwing my plastic bottle away to be recycled. :-)

The proud of Czech Republic is their own car industry Skoda. Nowadays a modern, popular brand in Europe, mostly because of the cooperation with Volkswagen. But in Czech Republic you can still see their little versions that were built in the 70's and 80's. Time after time a pleasure to look at.

The Skoda 120 was built between 1976 and 1980 and still are present numerously in the city of Prague and especially outside of the city. The engine is in the back, so the luggage has to be put in front. The colour are different from the colour cars have nowadays. Lightblue, beige and brown are 'popular' colours.

Troja Chateu (Trojsky Zamek)

by jo104

This is Prague's only genuine chateu & is set against a backdrop of vines.
It was designed by Jean-Baptiste Mathey for the powerful Sternberg family towards the end of C17.

Inside is an art gallery with a marvellous centre room with a mural covering the walls & ceiling of the room. There is a written text covering the details you may see on the painting.

Outside is a beautiful baroque staircase & some French style formal gardens

Open April - Sept Tues - Sun 10am-6pm & Nov - March Sat & Sun 10am-5pm 40kr

Take the bus 112 from outside Nadrazi Holesovice or walk from Vystaviste.
The Zoo is next door

Belvedere is in the eastern part of the Royal Gardens at the Prague Castle. I was one of the only people walking around the garden that afternoon and it was a very eerie feeling. As you can see in the winter time there is a certain haunted feeling that comes from the building.
