Small boutique pension on a medieval street just off Karlova Ul. Only a handful of rooms, tastefully modernized; excellent breakfast in the basement. Super-nice!

    U Melounu: U Melounu
  • Satisfaction:
  • U Melounu is small hostel which is a further from the town center (10 min walk to Wencelas Square; 15 to Old Town square).
At first glimp I was wondering where I had to enter, and yes it is the very little door you have to enter.
I slept in a room with 6 beds. Pitty that there was only 1 key for the room. Room is clean and you don't have to bring your own towel, you get a big one. The lockers seemed to be new and a bit bigger that the usual ones. I dared to put it in my backpack.
Luggage room is also available. Entrance via the garden.

Yes the hostel has a garden with must be fun in summer time and for me now end of february nice to see the snow.

The breakfast room is located in the cellar and is a bit small. Breakfast was a bit less than in the Travellers hostel. No real cheese and no meat (except for the pate/pasty).

    Friendly recptionistes and 24hr open.

Comfortable clean rooms for very reasonable price.

    2 nights 600 CZK - 18,93 EUR.

100 CZK to make use of lockers which you got back when you return the key.

U Prince (on Old Town Square): Excellent Location!
  • Satisfaction:
  • If you want to be in the middle of the action, this is the place.

Right on Old Town Square and many rooms have a view of the clock tower and Tyn Church. Very cool.

We were there over New Years Eve so the prices were VERY jacked up. $220 a night over the holiday and about $130 a night normally. But, I must say it was well worth it.

If you are staying during a non holiday time of year, the normal prices of around $130 is a great value. The hotel has been completely redone and the rooms are BIG and very nicely furnished including sitting are, full sized dresser, small frig, etc.

It is a bit more expensive than the average Prague stay but I would highly recommend it.

U Tri Bubnu: Atmospheric hotel   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed in rooms 17 (attic), 18 and 10. The attic room was very nice, big and clean.

Default of the hotel the non-existance of elevator. So you have to climb the 2 floors for room 10 and 3 floors for 18. As for 17 you have another one stair inside the room. Considering we were carrying heavy suitcases it was a subject (of course known before our arrival). Staff assisted us in carrying up to the first floor where we stored them for few hours before checking in.

The location is perfect, just behind the astronomical clock.

Disadvantages of the No.17 attic room:
    1. Very sensitive in external temperature. Suppose this doesn't matter during winter with central heating but in the summer with no airconditioning....
    2. Very-very small bathroom located downstairs from the main room
    3. Hotel is surrounded by restaurants and if you keep windows open smells come and visit you.

    Generally satisfied.

U Tri Bubnu ( House at the three drums )
is a 15th Century building situated just around the corner from The Old town square.
Modernised in 2002 it gives you a great feel of the past with all mod cons.
All the bedrooms have original exposed timbers. We stopped in room 13 ( Lucky for us ) which was on the 3rd floor . Access was via a stone spiraling staircase.
The cost was 80 UK Pounds per room , per night.
A point to note is, if you pay by credit card as I did, there is a 3% charge.
The rooms come equipped with satalite (sp?) TV, direct dial phone, fan & Mini bar ( the minibar prices were 50 crowns per item for water , beer , and coke , all in small cans or bottles ). Buy your own drinks while you are out and take them back, its a lot cheaper.

A great feel of the past, with up to the minute mod cons. The accomodation was clean and spacious. Huge fat pillows! - a must for the weary traveller. We kept the fan on at night because open windows attract green flying insects that are attracted by the light.

U Tri Pstrosu: At the Three Ostriches next to the Charles Bridge
  • Satisfaction:
  • We stayed for 3 nights in room 16 which was shown as room 105 on the website. The room was a standard double room on the 1st floor and cost 4,200CZK a night. There is no lifts or Air Con in this traditional hotel. The room had a nice double bed but no view of the Charles Bridge. It was good weather when we were there and we left the windows open at night to cool down. This was nice but the noise from the bridge went on through the night. We upgraded on our return leg of our holiday and stayed in room 31 which was a small suite on the 3rd floor. The suite was far superior and had excellent views of the Bridge and the Bridge tower. This came to 6,000CZK for the night.

I chose this hotel for its olde worlde romantic rooms and its central location right next to the Charles Bridge. The rooms are all individual and full of character, The small suites are not small and are very spacious. I would highly recommend staying in the rooms on the 2nd or 3rd floors as they will have better views of the bridge and the little quarter bridge tower. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel had a resturant but we gave it a miss as it was a bit pricey.

U Zlate Studne (At the Golden Well): Possibly the best Inn ever
  • Satisfaction:
  • U Zlaté Studně (At the Golden Well) is the ideal inn: supremely beautiful, ideally located, comfortable, peaceful, and served by outstanding people. In our travels through the Czech Republic it was a most gracious home away from home.

It's hard to know where to start--but here's an example: from our room's window, you look down onto the Inn's comfortable lower terrace, which itself looks over 2 Malá Strana palaces and their gardens. From that terrace, you can look up at Prague Castle, which is just up a few flights of stairs into the rose gardens. (Emperor Rudolf II bought this house for legendary astronomer Tycho Brahe around 1600, wanting him close to the castle for visits.) The Inn's rooftop restaurant has a surreally beautiful view over Malá Strana and the entire city, including Old and New Towns almost to Vysehrad--and also featured the best dinner we ate in Prague. For a 16th-century building, there are surprising amenities tucked away: there is a small elevator to the terrace, and our room featured a hot tub. The hotel offers service, travel and accomodations packages and can arrange practically anything--they found wheelchair and walker assistance for my wife, which in old European cities is no small feat.

What else? There's a daily chess puzzle set up on a board in the lobby. The letter left in your room by manager Robert Safarik is a tour de force of welcome. Tomáš Jančík, Anastasiya Karova and Ayman Hamid are supremely skilled front-desk managers, concierges, and all-around good people. Service won't be better anywhere in Prague (and the friendliness is a little unusual as you may know if you've travelled in the CZR). Actually, service won't be this good most places in the world.

Downsides: it's not cheap. Some travellers will miss some amenities--no pool, business center--but if your ideal is a quiet, romantic glass of wine overlooking what may be Europe's most beautiful city, this is it.

    Here's the checklist:

    --Sublime views
--Beautiful building is historic (Tycho Brahe) and old (1500s)
    --Courteous, friendly, knowledgeable, professional service
--An actual excellent restaurant in Prague
    --Upstairs is a gigantic castle
--Cobbled lane and courtyard leading to the inn
--Close to very Czech pub U Hrocha (At the Hippo)
    --Whirlpool baths in 16th-century surroundings
--Moravian wine package, a bottle a night. Is good and what the heck.

U Zlateho Jelena Hotel: Unhelpful Staff
  • Satisfaction:
  • Hotel was basic but then very close to the Old Square and within easy walking distance of everything. But the staff were very unfriendly not willing to help at all. There was building work going on right under our room, drilling and banging from early morning and all the staff could do was laugh. Our room wasn't cleaned during our stay and you had to go outside down the courtyard for breakfast which in -12 degrees is not funny. Wouldn't suggest anyone try this hotel.

The hotel backed on to a few resturants who used the courtyard to store their garbage bins, which were emptied nightly at around 2am. Which woke everyone up.

  • Bare bones accomodation in a great location with a unbeatable history. Started out as a nunnery in the Middle Ages and was a prison during the communist era. President Havel was interred here for awhile.
