Good restaurants

by Roxychris

We're going to Prague on the 4th and would hugely appreciate a small list of places to eat, neither fancy, nor too simplistic, just nice places with decent prices and that give you the chance to eat traditional high quality cooking, but leave you the opportunity to choose some general, more internationally common dishes. Hope I've got the message across. Thank you very much!

My advice is to go to the various microbreweries and pubs which serve food. There are plenty in Prague (I have some on my VT Prague pages). The food is always perfectly ok and very reasonably-priced, with traditional and 'European' dishes usually available.

I especially like the microbrewery at the Strahov monastery, near the castle

Have a look at other recommendations from VT-ers by putting 'Prague' into the searchbox top right. I did not eat at proper 'restaurants' in Prague, so you will find other useful suggestions on those pages.

As a regular visitor to Prague I always advise anyone asking this type of question on VT to avoid the tourist areas where prices are always much higher than in the suburbs. The food will be good but the transport system is such that a foray out of the centre is easy and we have found many excellent places to eat at half the cost of centre prices and these are places where the locals eat and you get a good atmosphere. One such place is called U Slamu. We never fail to eat here at least once everytime we visit and we found it just by getting out and about. It is well worth making the effort to get to and I guarantee you a lovely meal and good beer at a very reasonable price.Traditional Czech food to salads and steaks are on offer. The menu is in Czech and English although some dishes tend to get a bit "lost in translation" but the owners speak decent English so it isnt a problem. It is situated on Starostrasnicka. To get there take the green(A)line metro to the Strasnicka metro station. Go up to street level and turn right outside the station and U Slamu is on a corner about 200 metres up the road. Alternatively the number 26 tram going in the direction Nadrazi Hostivar from the centre stops about 10 metres from the door.

I'm from Prague and every time I have foreign friends visiting me and I want to take them out for a good Czech meal, I go to one of these places:

Travel Tips for Prague

Sedop taxi company

by Vendula

Not favorite at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, I'm natrive Czech and still have to write this. I would recommend you not to use SEDOP taxi company in Prague. Most of their drivers charge much more and even if you complain to the company (you have the receipt), they try not to reply and if you insist on getting the answer they tell you to send them the copy of the receipt again (you already did it with your first email). After telling them that you have already sent the copy of the receipt they stop talking to you completely. So the conclusion - not a reliable company at all.

Charles Bridge

by littlesam1

Tourists, tourists, and more tourists. That is what you see on the Charles Bridge. Also you will see street peddlers lining the bridge with their artwork. I went down early one morning before the crowds arrived. The bridge is very beautiful in the morning. There was a mist in the air and the statues along the bridge seem to come to live from within the mist. I watched as the vendors came to set up their tables for day. And finally the tourists started to arrive. But I had already had my moment with the Charles Bridge. So now it was time to leave the tourists to the vendors and move on.

Golem is a clay giant. Legend says that Ieguda Lev, the magic man who lived in Jewish ghetto, made the giant. Every Saturday Ieguda Lev put down a magic parchment into the giant's mouth that to revive the giant. Golem helped his master in work. But once Ieguda Lev forgot to take the parchment out and Golem began to kill people. Ieguda Lev made new magic words and could blow giant into dust. Legend says that remains of Golem are situated in the garret of Staronova Synagogue.

I went to watch the mighty Arsenal here in October, they played Sparta Prague in the Champions League.Due to crowd abuse in a previous game against Ajax, the ground was only half full. The travelling arsenal supporters were in full voice...and full of wonderful Czech beer to !!!!
We cheered and sang througout the whole match...Which arsenal won by 2-0,both goals coming from the Legendary Thierry Henry, who also broke the all time goal scoring record, for Arsenal. Camera, scarf and an empty belly to fill full of beer and hot roast chicken...MMMmmm

Charles bridge is a huge...

by SooBrand

Charles bridge is a huge tourist attraction - such a long wide bridge with twin towers at either end. BUT, no one seems to realise you can climb those towers. For a trivial 30p each you can climb three or four flights of stairs and get some superb views of the city. The downside is that you feel obliged to look at the exhibition they're really charging you for!
