Prague in December

by Fafbear

We are toying with the idea of coming to Prague in December for my husbands birthday, while we know it will be very cold, is it still a nice time to visit.
We are looking at Metamorphis Hotel in the Old Square

Prague is lovely, and you are right that it will be cold in December although dressing appropriately will help you to deal with that.

Another factor you may wish to consider is the lack of daylight. Even when I visited in late October (and it was pretty chilly then) it was dark by around 4.30pm. So exploring time is much more limited.

You may see some Christmas lights (depending on when you visit) and there will certainly be plenty of places where you can spend the evenings in the warm: Prague's pivovars (microbreweries) and pubs have excellent beer and good food.

So it's really a matter of personal choice although I have to admit that I enjoyed my second visit to Prague, in early April, much more.

It's not too cold in Prague in the winter in general but it's humid, cloudy and dark. In December, it can get dark at 3:00 pm.

December is good for visiting Prague because of the various Christmas markets all over the town. The biggest ones are on Vaclavske Namesti, Old Town Square and Namesti Miru.

There is Christmas decorations everywhere but unfortunately snow is quite uncommon in Prague.

When visiting a Christmas market, try varene vino or varak which is hot wine. Try tradelnik, something like a cake.

There will be a large christmas market in the Old Town Square when you visit. I will be in Prague myself from the 4th of Dec until the 9th. It will be cold with a high chance of snow but personally I think it enhances the experience. Wrap up warm and enjoy it.

I have just read Penny G's posting. As I don't live in Prague I don't know if snow there is common or not but ive been a regular visitor in november and december for many years now and it gets very cold ,especially at nightime, sometimes as low as minus 12 and I have experienced several inches of snow several times and also what I would describe as blizzard conditions. On other occasions its been cold and dry but go prepared for snow then you wont get caught out with the wrong clothing.Like I said snow or not you'll enjoy it.

Travel Tips for Prague

Prague Castle

by Julie1and2

Everyone who goes to Prague must take a walk up to the Prague Castle. The views from up there are simply amazing. There is also a beautiful garden, so if you're lucky enough to be there in the spring or summer be sure to stroll through the garden as well. I was introduced to Becherovka the first time I went to Prague. It's a liquor with a very distinctive taste. I love it and always bring a bottle of it back to the US!

Staromestska Radnize

Town Hall of the old town was built in 1338. In fact there are several buildings in the Town Hall ensemble but the main one is 69.5 meters high tower. Some parts of the town hall was destroyed in WWII but then completely renovated and now it has an original view. I recommend you to go to the roof of the tower where you can enjoy views of Hradcany and quarters near by. Some pictures are in the travelogue.

Beer n Jazz

by HippieFur

Budvar, Budvar, Budvar... Its everywhere, with good cause. Drink plenty of this stuff while youre there. Your not just going run into it at the local supermarket back in the states... atleast not where I live. Combine Budvar and a night at one of the fantastic Jazz venues, and you've just mixed the best of old prague with the best of new prague. I recommend AghaRTA, but there are plenty of places to hear some fantastic Jazz.

Sparta Praha football

by buffalo1975

I took opportunity to see some football as I often try to do when travelling! I was glad to be amongst the 6000 souls on a hot monday afternoon league matc, which meant little as both Sparta and Zlin are mid table.

The tickets at the Letna stadium (AKA Toyota Stadium) cost about 2 euros! So cheap and the football was good. High tempo.
