I shall be visiting at the end of March and I do expect Prague to be quite chilly.

You can get an idea from the climate averages here:

I cannot say what Prague will be like over the Easter weekend, but I can tell you that I deliberately planned my visit to end on Good Friday.

I visited Prague, Easter week a few years back, 31st March I think, it was all go all the time although I was not there Easter Sunday. Weather was warm in the sun during the day but still very cold at night.

Travel Tips for Prague

Prague for Kids

by gilabrand

I took my daughter to Prague when she was 10, and she loved it. We went to all the ordinary attractions, not necessarily for children, but it was fine with her.

I think kids will particularly enjoy the performers on Charles Bridge and the workshop for marionettes right under the bridge. There is a small toy museum near the castle that we didn't have time to go into, displaying toys that belonged to the princes and princesses.

In the late afternoon or evening, get tickets for a black theater performance, which is a kind of shadow theater with special lighting effects. No language skills are needed, and the subject matter is less important than the music and the pyrotechnics.

When we first got to Prague, we hired an open-topped antique 1930s car to take us on an hour's ride around town to get a feel for the place. It wasn't cheap but it was fun. You get a lot of people turning their heads, and for the time being, your kids won't complain that their feet hurt...

On the second floor of one of the houses on Golden Lane there's a display of knights' armor and gowns worn by the aristocracy. At the end of the corridor is a creepy-looking torture chamber. That was one place my daughter hated. She couldn't wait to leave...

go to a market

There are the tourist trap markets that you find everywhere in Prague, with the only difference being that you don't have to sell your mother to buy a good souvenir! Definitely worth a look, if only for nice framed prints of the city. However, don't get one of the 'locally' handcrafted chess sets if you are looking for something authentic - they sell exactly the same ones in Krakow, Poland! (was v. disappointed lol)

Trdelník is actually not local custom as I heard it is actually from Slovakia :)
However, call it anyway you want, used to ne local (when it was one country) or just borrowed custom by now, this is common local kind of cake you can by on the stalls in the old city square.

A must see!

I don't know how off the beaten path Vysehrad is, exactly. It is not too far from the city center. Perhaps a half an hour, 45 minute walk from Charles Bridge. A lot quicker if you take the tram. But if you walk you get to see a lot of New Town, which is also a plus.

If you become annoyed with all the crowds and want to get away but still see Prague, Vysehrad is wonderful! Situated atop a rocky cliff above the Vlatava, Vysehrad means "Castle on the heights". According to the legend it was the first seat of Czech Royalty. Princess Libuse, from this spot, forsaw the greatness that will one day be Prague.

From here you can see unrivaled views of the Vlatava and Prague. The serene park provides a wonderful setting for people tired of the Charles Bridge commotion. The Neo-Gothic church of St. Peter and St. Paul is quite impressive.

There is a little cafe, with a lunch menu being quite reasonable, right next to the church.

Look down..........

Look over the left edge of Charles Bridge, facing the Mala Strana side and on that bank of the Vltava, and you'll see this chap hidden away.

He's Roland, with his special golden sword, and dates from the nineteenth-century. The real sword is, of course, is built into the bridge itself ready for emergency use.

The original statue was destroyed in 1648.
