Cheap and Cheerless

Budec is a very basic but clean hostel. The rooms are quite spacious, and also very light. They are light because the walls are whitewashed and also because the curtains are thin, lacy little numbers that are almost barely there. If you want privacy at night, it'll have to be in the dark.

The staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast is frugal but perfectly adequate.

A little creative writing on the various websites describing the hostel makes it sound more appealing than it actually is. It is not 2 minutes walk from the nearest metro station, but 5 to 10. It is not "a few min walk from Wenceslas Square", but 20 minutes. The kitchen facilities were neither open nor mentioned on check-in. Nor was the 24-hour TV room - not that that's a big problem, it's just that it was mentioned yet didn't seem to exist. The bar you'll see pictured is in fact across the road and not part of the hostel.

The hostel is only open during summer - it's student halls for the rest of the year.

The biggest positive about the place is the price; its location is just that little bit far enough to be mildly irritating. It's not a bad place to stay if you're strapped for cash. I've got no major complaints.

For unassuming travelers

I live in Budec whole year - it is my dormitory (one of Charles University dormitories).

During summer the first 3 floors are hostel.

I think that it is really nice place for stay. It is in Vinohrady (not the citycenter but you can be there in 5-10 min.). This locality if full of very nice and small pubs with even nicer prices:) The rooms are nice and clean and the facilities are common.

You can choose single or double bedroom.

Don't believe the pics on the web sites ... the rooms look better (those pics aren't up-to-date) and the bar isn't part of the hostel but there's a pub across the street.

Unique Quality: Common TV room.
Kitchen on each floor.
2 bathrooms and WC on each floor.
Breakfast.

The furnishings isn't new but ... Czech students live here whole year and are happy here so why you shouldn't be:)

5 minutes walk to the metro line "C" (red). 10 minutes walk to the Wencelslav square. 5 minutes walk to the tram station (no. 22, 16, 10, ...).

A: "You validate it once and then it is good for the 24/72 hours on all public transport whether metro, bus or tram."
