The Zoo

by mogaly

Hi Friends,
We'll be heading to Prague next August .We are 17 persons and staying at Balbínova 496/8, 120 00 Prague 2-Vinohrady . Does anybody know how to get to the Zoo , we've heard about boats going there ? Is it worth visiting ? what about having lunch at low-priced and nice restaurants there ?

Re: The Zoo

Catch bus #112 from Nádraží Holešovice subway station till the last stop which is the Zoo.

You can combine this with a visit to the Troja Chateau which is just across the road from the zoo.

First, Zoo is well worth the visit. A year ago Forbes rated it No 7 in the world. Biggest tropical pavilion in Europe - Sumatra tropics. One of two zoo's in Europe (and 20 in the world) displaying India crocodiles - gavials.

Fastest is to take Metro C to "Nadrazi Holesovice", then change to bus 112 (starts there, around 10 min intervals) - around 15 minutes ride. Most buses 112 terminate at the Zoo, except few going 1 stop more to Botanical garden ("Fata Morgana" greenhouse there is also quite interesting).

Boats leave 3 times a day, it is oriented more towards the children. More info here:

There are eateries/caffees inside zoo, wouldn't call them restaurants - oriented towards families with children mainly.

Thanks both alancollins and r13 for the invaliable information .But I wonder which public transport goes to the boat dock ? Are cameras allowed there ?

Re: The Zoo

by r13

Of course cameras are allowed.

Departure of the boats is close to the "Palackeho Namesti" tram stop (go to I.P. Pavlova then downhill direction trams No 4, 10, 16) or Metro B stop "Karlovo namesti"- exit to the Palacheho bridge.

Arrival point at Troja is in my estimation about 700 m away from the Zoo entrance which you have to walk.

I'm greatly appreciative r13 .

Travel Tips for Prague

Bridges, Castles, Sausages & Beer

by RockTadgers

If I was really trying to impress somebody with Prague, I would take them in the winter to catch some snow. Anywhere looks good after a dusting, but Prague is breathtakingly beautiful in the winter. It's sights become luminous, and everything seems so crisp and clearly defined.

Then I'd take them along the tourist trail at two in the morning, so we'd have Old Town and Charles Bridge to ourselves. I miss the beer halls most, because the beer really is as good as everyone says. Gambrinus is a personal favourite, possibly with some utopenci - pickled sausage with onions and grey-brown bread, which sounds horrid, but goes down a treat with a pivo or three!

Stroll on Charles bridge

by extrajoce

Karlùv most in Czech, this is one of the most famous attractions of the capital. Looking towards Malá Strana, one can see the castle perched on top of the hill. As you walk along, there are many beautiful statues, and the bridge is pedestrian only, adding to its charm. Centrally located on the royal walk, it is unique and can not be missed.

Touch the St John of Nepomuk Statue

by Carino

As you can see people touched a spot on each statue over decades. These spots look really shiny compared with the rest of the statue....

It supposed to bring luck, when you touch it. So go there, close your eyes, wish something nice and hope that it might get true.

Go to Another City

by gaiusmarius

Unexpected and undiscovered until you get to Prague is the fact that the city is infested with pickpockets, crooks, shysters, con artists, etc. One can easily avoid this by avoiding Prague whose attractions are exceeded by countless other destinations. Anything Prague has to offer is significantly exceeded by other European destinations. However, in the realm of unsavory characters, Prague stands alone, far in advance of any other place I have been. The municipality of Prague turns a blind eye to these circumstances, after all, the victims are only tourists.

Prague is also pricey without appreciable return for one's expenditure. Go elsewhere. Should you not heed this advice, do recall after your Prague experience that I had warned you.

View over Mala Strana to Stare Mesto.

by dabidc

On a clear day you can see forever, well maybe not that far but the roof top view is a fascinating way to see the city from a very different angle.

The main building , with the green towers is that of St Nicholas' Church in Mala Strana square, very close to St Charles' bridge across the Vltava river.

I read the church was built between 1703 to 1755 and is in the Baroque style. It looms large in Malo Strana square. My own notes tell of an unbelievable interior.
