St. Vitus from the rear
by barbipez
I didn't know what to name this "tip," but wanted to include a snap shot...
i like st. vitus because
1) the gargoyles are SO cool. there's one that looks like a roach from under - i think we decided it's a scorpion - STILL CREEPY!
2) the stained glass windows are beautiful - done by amazing artists like mucha (can't remember the others' names right now.
3)beautiful architecture - the cathedral took a LONG time to build and you can tell by just looking at the front - i'll explain once i can produce a picture (hint: look right under the rose window from the outside at the statues - notice anything?) i dont go to the castle much anymore now that i live here, but i do enjoy when people visit so i have to take them up there...it's got beautiful views and lots of history.
Streets, streets and names in Praha1
by Luchonda
The capital is divided into 15 separate districts each indicated by a 'Praha' suffix after the main street address (and postcode) e.g. Praha 1. The number of a building follows the street name, whilst postcodes comprise of five digits, grouped as 3 plus 2 digits Just strolling around and enjoy the atmosphere of the so called "Golden city"
Changing of the Guards
by sandysmith
The changing of the guards ceremony takes place at Hadcrany Castle on the hour but the most hilarious one is at noon when there is music and banner exchange. For the best view stand peer through the gate on the far left hand side to see the banner exchange or inside the coutyard to see the musicians.
To sum it up it was like watching Trumpton to the sound of Thunderbirds theme tune witrh the guards marching like John Cleese doing his silly walk!
John Lennon was not here!
by morgenhund
The Lennon Wall is not actually that far off the beaten path - it is a handy detour to/from the castle from the old town. John Lennon never came here (as far as I know!) but the wall is called the Lennon wall because originally Beatles lyrics seemed to dominate the graffiti that covered the wall. It became a monument towards free speech - in communist times the wall became the soapbox of the repressed people of Prague and people risked arrest and imprisonment to get their message across. Nowadays the graffiti has gone down hill - it is in the "Pedro e Giulia 24/01/2005" league and the usual nationalist statements about ethnic minorities. Worth a brief look but not worth a special trip.
Many tourists go just only to...
by prazacek
Many tourists go just only to the downtown so they see only the best of Prague. But I strongly recommend to go out of the downtown to any suburb (Dejvice, Kobylisy) or just to another part of city (Vysehrad, Vinohrady, Zizkov). If you want to see how people in Prague live or how they really are, just go to any pub on the suburb or simply sit on the tram and travel (longest lines are nr. 25 & nr. 26 - both go through the city). You don't have to worry 'how I'll get back', because all trams are turning at the end stations and getting back exactly same way. If you really want to see how people there really live, I strongly recommend the tram trip :) ... tickets for 1 hour cost 12 Kc (also transfer ticket - you can use it on all kinds of public transport during one hour), so you'll need like 4 of them.
