EHIC cards for Prague

by Grimh71

Hi,

I'm travelling to Prague from the UK in a week. I've just read in a guide that a EHIC is required. I know it is advisable to have one, but do I actually need one in order to travel there?

I've applied for one but it may not come in time. Please put my mind at rest!

You won't need to show it to enter the Czech Republic. They will only want to see your passport.

So if it does not come in time, you will be able to travel without it. But do make sure you have good health insurance too (the Post Office's is good, and easy to access online or at a PO). Check it will cover you for health expenses in a country where the EHIC is accepted but you have not got yours.

Insurance is essential anyway, imo, because the EHIC does not cover the cost of repatriation (as far as I know). You can never tell when you may need medical treatment and insurance will save a considerable amount of hassle (and expense). Even a broken ankle may require the cost of one or two extra seats on the plane.....

I think the guide may have been referring to people who require a Schengen visa) to visit EU countries. Health insurance is a requirement for this, and proof may be required on entry. As the UK is an EU country you do not need a Schengen visa.

Alternatively, it may have meant that you must produce your EHIC to get free (or expenses-to-be-claimed-back) medical treatment. This is very much the case in all EU countries, and is why you should get health insurance if your EHIC does not turn up (and, imo, should get anyway for the reason I gave above).

Travel Tips for Prague

INFORMATION!!! Old Town Hall Tourist Office

by M0B1US

Painted pink so you can find it easier... ;-)

This is the official tourist mecca for all things Prague! By official I mean watch out for all those other 'tourist offices' preying on unsuspecting tourists and their bulging wallets!

Come here for your Prague Card, your tickets, last minute accommodation, sightseeing tours and trips, guided walks, guidebooks, maps, car rental (bad idea unless you're leaving Prague!), travel passes - Um, basically the usual stuff you'd expect to find... ;-)

This building is also the gateway to the Old Town Hall Tower, a diorama of the city and a gallery that exhibits an interesting array of temporary art installations - no matter how much you try to avoid this place you'll keep coming back here! ;-) Tourist Information Centre

Old Jewish cemetary

by extrajoce

This old cemetary is the main focal point of the Old Jewish neighbourhood, just north of the Old Town. The display of plain tombstones is a very rare vision, typical of Jewish communities. In fact, the Nazis kept it in order for it to become a museum of an extinct race. Gruesome thought...

CHANGING OF THE GUARD AT PRAGUE CASTLE

by LoriPori

When we arrived at Prague Castle, we were just in time to witness the CHANGING OF THE GUARD. At the front gates there were two very cute, very nattily dressed guards standing in their little guardhouses. People were taking pictures with them and I don't know how they managed to keep a straight face. Then there was some commotion behind them and we could see that some new replacements were coming. Cool or what! Amid some great pomp and ceremony, the two cute guards were replaced by two more cute guards. This ceremony takes place on the hour.

Tanící dum (Fred & Ginger or Dancing Building)

by Barton1968

Architect by Frnak O.Gehry in 1992-95. Frank Gehry's exuberantly gestural new office building on the edge of the Vltava river is a bold symbol of Prague's architectural. economic and political renewal. The new Nationale-Nederlanden building occupies a promine corner site on the edge.

Delicious Parisian cooking awaits you at the top of the curvaceous "Fred and Ginger" building inn La Perle.
