The Hotel Palace Praha was like a dream: damask, down pillows, mahogany, marble...liveried doormen; the most attentive staff...we couldn't touch a suitcase or open a door--someone was always ahead of us to perform that service.
A $5 tip to a cocktail waitress brought us the most attentive service--and we left her $10! So you can only imagine how we were received the second night.
I felt like royalty. Never in my life have I stayed in such a place.
This was 2004--before the Czech Republic switched to the Euro. For three days, we signed for everything: meals, drinks, room service, dry cleaning..and when we checked out, we discovered that we paid $100/day. (We laughed out loud: this was what we'd paid for a cheap hotel in New Braunfels, Texas on 4th of July weekend!)
We'd been warned about car thefts/vandalism in Prague so we were relieved when the doorman arranged to put our car in the secure parking garage. No problems at all.
This hotel is one of my fondest memories of Prague.
I love this hotel. It has the friendliest service of any European hotel that I have ever stayed in. All of the rooms are air-conditioned.
The big buffet breakfasts are superb. Try the smoked halibut.
Unique Quality: It opened in 1906 and has a lot of character, but what really makes this place so special is the quality of the staff. They are wonderful. You check out, thinking I'm definitely coming back here again.
Directions: Very central. Just off Wenceslas Square and only a few minutes' walk from the Old Town Square.
