Fried Carp, For Christmas Eve Dinner
by von.otter
“Czechs have eaten carp at Christmas for as long as history remembers.”
— Jan Hofbauer, whose family has been raising carp in southern Bohemia since the 16th century
CARPING FOR CARP—All day Tom hoped that around every corner we would come across the legendary Christmas carp mongers in their full-length, black leather apron with a carp-filled wooden barrel where Czechs buy their main course for the Christmas Eve dinner. Alas, no live carp; Tom had to wait until dinner at the Seven Angels Restaurant for his fried carp (see accompanying photo).
KINDNESS TO ANIMALS—Some Czechs just can’t bring themselves to kill, then eat, the live carp that was bought on Christmas Eve; some children think of them as pets! We happened upon a woman (see accompanying photo) on Christmas Day who had brought hers down to the river, and tossed it in.
Packing for cold weather
by tomruth78
Have an over the shoulder bag for the day rather than a rucksack, it is a lot safer as the bag rests to the front of your body Comfortable shoes are essential as lots of walking is involved in trips to Prague. Lots of layers so that should the weather improve you can strip off. Always carry an umbrella as it can rain anytime. Take lots of film as it is expensive in Prague. Good internet cafes allow you to download and burn your digital photographs for a good price.
Wax Museum!
by xxgirasolexx
This is a great wax museum located next to Karlstejn. It consists of forty wax figures. First there is a small town from the time of Karlstejn, then the court of Charles IV, torture chambers, the Hussite period, and then the court of Emperor Rudolf II. At the end there is an exhibition of the Habsburgs, famous personalities from the 19th and 20th centuries, and a kaleidoscopic cinema.
Empty streets
by Bigs
Again I only can suggest that you leave the main streets for a while. Just try one next to the main tourist paths, you will find quiet and empty lovely streets with neraly noone around. It surprised me really as I thought, that also these streets would be filled with tourists. It semms that they keep on the main streets though, lucky for you....
