At the Three Ostriches next to the Charles Bridge

We stayed for 3 nights in room 16 which was shown as room 105 on the website. The room was a standard double room on the 1st floor and cost 4,200CZK a night. There is no lifts or Air Con in this traditional hotel. The room had a nice double bed but no view of the Charles Bridge. It was good weather when we were there and we left the windows open at night to cool down. This was nice but the noise from the bridge went on through the night. We upgraded on our return leg of our holiday and stayed in room 31 which was a small suite on the 3rd floor. The suite was far superior and had excellent views of the Bridge and the Bridge tower. This came to 6,000CZK for the night.

Unique Quality: I chose this hotel for its olde worlde romantic rooms and its central location right next to the Charles Bridge. The rooms are all individual and full of character, The small suites are not small and are very spacious. I would highly recommend staying in the rooms on the 2nd or 3rd floors as they will have better views of the bridge and the little quarter bridge tower. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel had a resturant but we gave it a miss as it was a bit pricey.

U Tri Pstrosy / Zu den 3 Straussen

Hotel U Tri Pstrosu / the 3 oistrichs .
It got its name by the fact that it once belonged to a rich merchant, whose only trading-object were the feathers of oistrichs - they were the latest fashion at the time around 1600 A.D.

Lateron it bacame a coffe-house and finally a really great restaurant and Hotel

Unique Quality: If you click on my pic, you may see the hotel :
It is rather dark, but it is the house you see in front of the lighted tower.

They offer a great breakfast-buffet for 300 Kronen.
Not cheap, but a special event on a special location !

Caro. Mas trata-se de um edifício que vem referido em todos os guias turísticos. Com vista para a ponte Carlos (Karlov) (ver fotografia seguinte) Muito calmo, personalizado, mas caro.

And for "Sylvester" / the last day of the year they had a menu, dancing and music for a overall-price of 3900 Kronen in 2004.

Travel from Prague to Salzburg/Vienna

by j351

My husband and I will be in Prague for the first time in August. We had wanted to take a train to Salzburg, spend a night and then go to Vienna. We will be flying home from Vienna, so we have to end up there.
My questions are:
1. Rail Europe seems to have only one train from Prague to Salzburg that gets in at 01:00. Does anyone know of any other train that one might take to Salzburg?
2. Is it difficult to rent a car? Would that be a better possibility?
3. How hot is it in August? It seems that the hotels do not have air conditioning. We will be at the U Tri pstrosu. Has anyone had any experience with that? Thank you!!

Hello,
1. As for the train to Salzburg, check the timetables at www.jizdnirady.cz (there is an English version - flag in right bottom corner).
2. It is very easy to rent a car in Prague, there are the local agencies of the big international companies (Hertz, Budget...etc.). Check with them. Generally it is possible to get the car in Prague and leave it in another country, but you have to pay extra-money.
3. In August, the temperature can be between 20-30 degrees C, usually around 25. Air conditioning is not necessary in the night.
U tri pstrosu is a very nice and expensive hotel in a historic house just next to the Charles bridge. Excellent location, very touristic, but I think quit. No experience with services. The rooms might have something similar to air conditioning)
Check on: www.utripstrosu.cz
Enjoy your stay!

Although I am not sure how hot it is in August, it was VERy hot there a few weeks ago! However, Prague is so beautiful it is easy to forget that you are sweating like crazy (haha)! It is not a problem being in a room without air conditioning - the hotels are often such old buildings that the walls are so thick they don't get very hot - we never had a problem sleeping dispite the heat!

Yes, this summer is a little bit crazy - but it is the same all around Europe - look at temperatures in Paris, Rome... (35-40 d.)
