Prague city apartments: Forget hotels, rent an appartment
Forget hotels, too expensive and not so cosy an appartment. Since I travelled to Bucharest last year I have rented appartments all the time. No going back!
It works out cheaper, more cosy, you can cook, use fridge, oven, microwave, get ironing board out!
Most places are not fussy how many use appartment. They normally have sofa beds for guests! You pay for appartment, not per person.

Hotel Excel City, Prague 6.: Basic, clean, cheap but good value.
Four of us went to Prague for 2 nights to celebrate my Wife's birthday. We had been to Prague before, liked it, and just wanted a quick low priced trip. I read a couple of reviews that described The Excel City as being good value, clean and a little like a travel lodge. The fact that it is a little out of town didn't pose a problem as the Prague transport system is very cheap & excellent.
The journey from the airport couldn't be easier - a few stops on the 179 bus from outside the terminal and you're there. Best value is a 1, 3 or 7 day travel pass which covers you for the buses, metro, trams and the funicular up Petrin Hill.
From the Hotel into town is easy. There are 3 tram routes ( 1, 2 & 18 ) which run a 2 minute walk away. All trams pass Hradcanska Metro station ( Line A ) or tram 18 goes right into town right past the steps to The Castle, over the river and right past Charles Bridge.
The four of us had a 2 bedroom 'apartment' which consisted of 2 twin rooms as well as a toilet, seperate shower room and a small kitchen with a hob, kettle and fridge etc. The furnishings were basic to say the least, there was no T.V., the beds were very firm and the towels were hard.
Unique Quality: On the positive side everything was very clean and functional. The staff were helpful and spoke enough english. Breakfast was continental style but limited with a choice of cereal, bread, rolls, jams etc as well as meat, cheese, tea, coffee and juices. There was more than enough to set you up for a busy days sightseeing. There is a supermarket just down the road and 2 - 3 restaurants within walking distance.
Good points : Price, value for money, cleanliness & helpful staff, quiet location.
Bad points : Basic furnishings, firm beds & towels.
If you want a basic bargain break and don't need to be right in the middle of town then this could be the place for you. We would consider going back.

Hostel Kondor: A scary experience with a formidable Czech!
My friend and I arrived in Pragu station only to be confused by the fact that we had not landed in the main train station but a secondary train station thereby rendering our faithful lonely planet guides somewhat useless whilst we tried to navigate to our hostel via public transport (we refused the taxis) and brains...oh what a combination...!!!!
1 hour later we managed to find the hostel only to find the owner had left and that she's only there between 9-5pm. We arrived at 7pm. whoops. A number can be found outside the hostel to call so we did and the poor lady had to traipse back to the hostel and let us in.
The hostel itself was well heated, had supplies for tea and coffee- quite possibly the largest shelf filled with loo roll i've ever seen! and lots of very useful maps and info on the city itself.
The stay was comfortable however on the day we were to leave, we wanted to sightsee first and leave our luggage there- well there's no luggage room/safe area and we had to time ourselves according to the owner's dental appointment. unfortunately we were a little late getting there and i dont think she was very happy with us!
so we ended up having to take our luggage to a locker at the train station which worked out to be easier than we thought and less hassley.

Merlin Hotel
The Merlin Hotel, owned by Olga Kaftanova, is a clean, warm, and basic hotel room in a central location in Prague. We paid 2550 CZK for 2 nights (106 USD), but prices for the double rooms range from 1300 CZK to 2300 CZK per night depending on the season. Our room was a nice double with two large, queen sized beds and a private bath, but some rooms have shared baths and there seems to be a wide variety of room styles and layouts in this old building.
We booked the hotel through a hotel service on the north end of Wenceslas Square near Cafe Odkolek. There, we paid a 500 CZK deposit, meaning we owed just 1950 CZK when we arrived at the hotel. A quick subway ride later and we stepped into the small, downstairs front lobby area of the hotel to get our room. They asked us for the whole 2550 CZK instead of just the 1950 we owed... half-hearted apologies aside, they asked if we wanted to pay around 80 CZK for breakfast and we graciously declined. The young Asian girl handed us 3 keys and walked us to the room. We exited back to the street, turned right, and walked up the stairs to the first door we came to. The first key opened this door, and we started up the stairs. After about 5 very tall floors, we arrived at our room. It had worn, but nice parquet-style floors, fresh paint on the walls and a nice, big, open feel. The view was stunning...Prague castle was clearly visible about 2 kilometers to the north.
Our stay here was very comfortable until the last morning when the cold temps broke a water main in our part of the city. I had to convince the girl at the front desk to give me a bottle of water for free so I could wash up a little, especially since we were taking an overnight train that night. Though they offered to hold our bags at the front desk that last day, we decided to trek to the train station to place them in a locker.
All in all, the hotel was comfortable, but nothing special. Watch for the scam of trying to charge you extra when you check in. Avoid cold weather so the water lines don't break!

U Dvou zlatych klicu (Two Golden Keys): A good 3-star hotel
Two Golden Keys is a nice 3-star Hotel in a great location just at the border of New and Old Town. But since its adress is actually within the Nove Mesto, New Town, it's much cheaper than any corresponding hotel a few yards away in Stare Mesto, the Old Town. Our room was on the 2nd floor (no elevator), it was big, clean and had actually nice pictures on the wall - a first for me. In the lobby is a computer with free Internet. The only negative thing about the hotel is breakfast. They offer a small buffet in the bar next door. Since it only closes at 6 a.m. the room was always very smoky. The breakfast itself was definitely not more than ok. Bread, but no croissants or any other of those nice little rolls you get in any bakery. And their Coffee - Yuk! Since there were many nice Cafes in the area we started having breakfast elsewhere.
Unique Quality: Great Location. Metro and Tram Stations are just a few steps away. But you don't really need public transportation: all major sights are within walking distance (Old Town Square: 10 Min.; Charles Bridge: 10 Min; Wenceslas Square: 5 Min). Tescos, one of Pragues largest department store, is just around the corner. They've got a huge supermarket where you get water, bread, apples and any other supplies for your long walks through Prague. The building is really beautiful.

Residence Belehradska: Greatest Accomodations in Prague
I arrived and was met at the airport with guy holding a sign with my name and taken to the Apartment. I was completely blown away with how nice the apartment was and very secure including a wall safe, steel louvres that cover the windows and a triple secure entryway. Everything was spotless and it was fully furnished with dishes and everything you need for a stay. I was provided a map of Prague with all the spots to see. The owners were even very gracious in working with me because I had forgot it was cash only payment and my debit card would only allow so much per day withdrawl and it actually took me 3 days to pay in full. I was also given a ride to the train station when I left for a small fee.

Hotel Capri: Hotel Capri
A descent place, I would stay there again. Not the poster for "luxery" but what does that really matter if you don't plan on being in your room that much?
Free breakfast, good food.
Clean.
Tiny bathroom.
