Stare Mesto Square
by Tom_Fields
The Stare Mesto, or Old Town, is built around a beautiful central square. The center of it is the beautiful 14th century Old Town Hall, with its Astronomical Clock. This clock was built in the 15th century by Mikulas of Kadan. Every hour, the Procession of the Apostles appears along the top of this clock. It's definitely worth the wait.
Across the square is the 18th century Baroque Church of St Nicholas. Just beyond, towering over the square, is the imposing Church Our Lady of Tyn. Dating from the 15th century, this is the best example of Gothic architecture in the Stare Mesto.
This square has seen much of Prague's colorful history. In the 15th through 17th centuries, religious heretics were executed here. In 1945, residents greeted the Soviet troops who had taken the city from the Germans. But 23 years later, they stoned Soviet tanks with Molotov cocktails as they came to end the Prague Spring (the liberal movement). In 1990, this was the scene of the Velvet Revolution, when the Czech people dissolved their ties with the Warsaw Pact and became independent.
Great Location

I booked this Hotel as part of an Air Miles package so it is difficult to compare on a price basis. I did look at other Hotels but opted for the Mercure in view of its location. I am glad I did as it was within easy walking distance of Old Town Square as well as being close to a Metro station. We got everywhere very easily.
The Hotel staff were excellent, particularly Pavla, the concierge, with whom I exchanged e-mails before we left. She was so helpful and arranged the Hotel Taxi to meet us at the airport. Even though our flight was an hour late the taxi was waiting for us. Breakfast was very busy but again the staff were impressive and everything was dealt with most efficiently and with happy smiling faces.
I would highly recommend this Hotel. Even though it is a chain operation, they seem to have got every thing right.
Fantastic stay

My Fiancee and I went to Prague for a short break and to be honest we weren't sure what to expect of Prague and of the Hotel.
However the Hotel was in an excellent location, and certainly lives up to its 4 stars. The staff were friendly and helpful, the accommodation was perfect and the evening meal was excellent.
We will definitely be back next year!
Lovely Hotel

We have just returned from a weekend in Prague staying at the Mercure Hotel. When reading the reviews I was a little anxious as some reviewers said that the rooms were small and hot. Our room was lovely - a good size and the temperature was easy to control. The hotel is in an ideal location, was beautifully decorated and the staff were both helpful and friendly. Food was great. I would stay there again and would recommend it to my friends.
Perfect

I stayed 2 nights with a group of 5 friends. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Old Town and all the public transport systems. The staff were superb and the breakfast was great. We were all very impressed. There is some noise from a large building site next door although it wasn't a major problem and wouldn't stop me staying here again.
As previous reviewers have mentioned - the shower is fantastic!
There is a Thai massage centre en-route to the Old Town which is up a couple of flights of stairs and the first impressions were a bit seedy - don't be put off, the massage is very good and it was great after being cooped up on a flight.
Great Central Hotel

A relative newcomer to Prague and a hotel that I've no doubt will soar in poularity.
A 2 minute stroll takes you to the main shopping drag and, Wenceslas Square, Old Town Square and Charles Bridge are all within a pleasurable stroll through Pragues enticing streets.
Rooms were nicely furnished with ample space and more importantly-comfortable.
Tastefully decorated throughout it's public areas, the bar was very warm and welcoming whilst the dining areas appeared very classy without being too upmarket.
Staff were polite and helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here.
A perfect business and short stay hotel although if I had a critisism it would be the high cost of eating or, drinking here relative to Pragues multitudes of other fine restaurants and bars!
Nevertheless, a small price to pay should you so require.

Taxi from Airport to City

Can anyone tell me roughly how much would a taxi cost from the airport to Hotel Century Old Town, Na Porici 7,Prague 1
Re: Taxi from Airport to City

Take authorized taxi in front of terminal and it should not cost more than 500 CZK (day time)= equivalent to around 20 EUR

How many persons are in your party? Cedaz minibuses operate from outside departures and charge a fixed rate to any hotel in the city centre. This is a cheaper option than a taxi if divided between a few friends. Also have you considered public transport? Very cheap and easy to get into the centre.

Thanks to all,
having read quite a few warnings about street taxis so have prebooked a shuttle taxi which seems quite reasonable between us. Have used something similar in the US and that worked well so hope this is as good.

I've been to Prague 3 times and always use public transport from the airport - very cheap, especially if you are buying one of the public transport passes for unlimited travel anyway (good to and from the airport as well).
Take (regular city) bus no. 119 from one of the platforms in front of the terminal building to the end of the line - the Dejvicka metro station - and from there very easily via metro to almost anywhere you'd want to go in Prague.

I agree with the statements about efficiency/price of the public transport, but you should realise, that sometimes there are reasons for taking taxi.
Some people have health issues or havy luggage (or many pieces of it) - to get to "Na Porici 7" one must take stairs down to Metro at "Dejvicka", then either tow luggage down the stairs again in "Mustek" station in order to change the metro line or have to walk over 1 km....

We have returned safely having had a wonderful visit. It is a beautiful city. Shuttle transfer was perfect and the driver very helpful particularly to a couple of the other passengers who found they had to switch hotels on arrival. He waited for them to get the details and then took them to their new one. Can't recommend them highly enough. https://www.prague-airport-transfers.co.uk
My husband has restricted mobility so we try to save him as much walking as possible when we can - saving him for the sight seeing! He will be suffering for a few more days now as we did a lot of hiking about but it was well worth it. Thankyou to all you VTers who replied to my questions
Re: Taxi from Airport to City-Why not the EXPRESS bus?
by aktravlr
Prague Airport to Centrum taxi travel has lost some of its "RipOff" reputation; however, for the CZ Koruna equivalent of one or two US dollars, there's an express public transit bus which runs every 15 minutes to the heart of downtown.
Just ask any info person at the airport; they pickup curbside.
