    Excellent Hotel/Hostel

    by

I stayed at the Mosaic House 3 nights in September 2011. Booked a double room with balcony through Expedia. Price was about average compared to similar properties, but the hotel is quite new.

Location was excellent, near Karlovo Nam. at the edge of the old Town. An easy walk to nightlife, great restaurants around. It took maybe 15-20 minutes to walk to Old Town Square.

The room was modern, very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was very large and spotlessly clean, though frankly a bit "modern". There was a small fridge, a safe, ipod charger and lots of electrical inputs. Everything worked nicely. Wifi throughout the hotel, though slow at times (most likely due to heavy usage) worked just fine.

I had read reviews that there had been problems with the light sensors turning the lights on and off...I had no such problems this time. I also read that it could be noisy, well I was on the top floor and had no problems at all with noise.

Hotel bar/restaurant- breakfast was served here and it was a nice selection of foods (eggs, breads, cheeses, cereal, potatoes) Breakfast was very nice. Later in the evening, the restaurant had good service. A bit expensive for a burger, but it was large and tasty:) Bar was active and the hotel made an effort to have activities the nights that i was there.

I would certainly stay at this hotel/hostel again and would recommend it to others without hesitation.

Unique Quality: This hotel markets itself as a combination of a hostel and hotel. I found the mixture more realistic and pleasant at this hotel. There were large common areas, an active bar and activities. It was easier to meet people and this had more hostel like features. In general the concept worked quite well here. It was a friendly atmosphere.

Balcony has a nice view of Prague. Be careful though, its a large step down when you are coming back inside.

Staff was young and very international. Very responsive to any requests and very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing.

There are laundry facilities on the premises, which i thought were quite expensive.
Hotel called transportation to the airport, which early in the morning (with a few other passengers) ended up costing like 7 euros.

Anyone hear of these hotels?

by Sean87

Going to book my hotel in prague for oct soon and have shortlisted it down to 3 fairly cheap ones. has anyone heard or been in any of these?

Hotel & Residence Standard http://www.standard.cz/en/ (looks to be the favourite so far)

Hotel Tiepolo http://www.tiepolo.cz/english/index.html

Hotel Inos http://www.hotelinos.com/hotel/

What do yous think?

Thanks

Hi

Location wise I would pick the Standard. It's within walking distance of the attractions.

I did not stay in any of them, but as I live here I would like to comment on the locations.

http://www.hotelinos.com/hotel/ is in a side street. So probably less noisy compared to others, but most distant in relation to tourist attractions.

Tiepolo is located in a block squeezed between two very busy streets. It is noisy dusty neighborhood (some other buildings in the block stand empty unused). You either will have windows to the yard or face the hill with the cars below day and night. The streets are in a "canyon" so flow of fresh air is restricted.

Standard is also on a quite busy street (the one along the river), but it is an open space so noise and pollution dissipates much more easily. Great view if you have river side windows. Best choice of public transportation, some attractions within walking distance.

I would also vote for Standard.

Travel Tips for Prague

Prague at night

by HORSCHECK

Take a stroll over the Charles Bridge (Karluv most) and around the Old Town Square at night. The historic buildings at the Old Town Square are beautifully illuminated in the darkness, so is Prague Castle which can be seen from the Charles Bridge.

Traditional Preparation....

by allsop8184

Here is the traditional bohemian way to set yourself up with Absinthe: Pour a dose (1-1.5oz) of good absinthe into a short glass. Place a sugar cube on a perforated spoon rested on top of your glass. Slowly pour or drip ice cold water over the sugar until your drink is diluted to a ratio between 3:1 and 5:1, but try various amounts and do whatever you think tastes best. Any use of fire and/or pyrotechnics may look impressive but has no connection with the traditional preparation of absinthe. Aside from being dangerous, this newly developed technique caramelizes the sugar and significantly affects the flavour for the worse. The final and tastiest step is: enjoy.

Go well equipped for the cold!

A light backpack for during the day to carry your stuff, not many pickpockets around, but it's a city so you should still keep an eye out! My holiday to Prague was in March therefore temperature was around -6 deg cel & coming from a meditteranean island - I froze!! So take warm coats, scarves, mufflers & gloves - all a must! Also, definitely a good pair of walking shoes, to see Prague properly it's best to walk everywhere! Readily available from supermarkets found all over the centre...They even have Tesco's! Lots of camera shops everywhere for your film/developing requirements... They have quite a few outdoor shops one good one is called HUDY SPORT in Old Town, who supply all sorts of outdoor gear, climbing accessories, pac macs and so on..

War Memorial

by Pieter11

At Ujezd, close to the entrance of the Petrin Funicolar, I saw this nice memorial statue. On the stairs towards the top of the Petrin Hill there are standing about eight men made of bronze. In the beginning the men look like normal persons, but the more you look up, the less is left of them. Clearly showing the toll people have to pay during wartime.

Walk the streets with open eyes

by Bigs

There is so much to see if you take your time and open your eyes. I love all the small details I see on my walks as for example this street lights.... They remember me off footballs and are very picturesque I think...
