Walking tours

Any recommendations re walking tours in Prague?

Re: Walking tours

by Mikebb

We took a walking tour when in Prague several years ago. A 6 hour walking tour with English speaking guide, limited to 12 people, there were only 4 on the day we went.6 hours sounds long but there were many stops, including lunch at a local restaurant and a 1 hour ferry trip along the Vlata River.

The Old Town Square, in front of the Astronomical Clock & Town Hall, all the tour coys gather here before 10am and sell their tours. Make certain you do not sign up with a group that has 30 or 40 people. See my tip on this walking tour on my Prague page.

Good Luck,
Mike

As with all of your posts, check with the hotels you are staying at. I've found and enjoyed walking tours in all of the cities you've mentioned this way. and had a wonderful experance with all of them.

I've booked just an hour or an evening before hand, no problems finding them.

There is a free tour in Prague. You pay only tips, depending on how much you like the guide. Check it out at the Tourist Info Centre at the Square. The guies take out an umbrella that has sign "free tour" on it.

There is a morning tour of the right bank at 10:30am, then afternoon tour of the left bank at 2pm, then evening beer and ghost tour (which costs some money).

I joined that, and I thought it was great to get some info about Prague, then after you can go back to the places and do a slow self-guided tour.

Travel Tips for Prague

Prague Tip

Walking around Prague can yield many pleasant surprises. There are beautiful artistic details in the houses that line the streets, and in the middle of the city you can find spots that make you wonder 'Am I in a city, or in the countryside?'

Morning in the Kampa

The "Little Venice" of Prague - this area was deluged in the terrible flood of 2002, but has been scoured, scrubbed, brushed, repainted, tucked and firmed and bolstered. Let's hope that such a flood never happens again!

A Long History of Torture

by zrim

Sometimes we forget that as all these wonderous landmarks were being built in medieval times that the kings, queens, dukes and arch-bishops favored a little torture on the side for those they did not get on with.

There are several torture exhibits around town. I only peaked in at the one in the Golden Lane since there was absolutely nothing else to see in that tourist trap.

Prague 3 - Zhizhnov

there are lots of bars in this working class district. i spotted a few squats too, unfortunately i didn't have time to explore it more thoroughly. but get the hell out of Prague 1 if you can in the evening!

Zamek Konopiste: Adventures of the Habsburgs.

by hundwalder

Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este ( Ferdie ) purchased ( or helped himself to ) a structurally sound medieval fortress castle nestled in the central Bohemian forest. Built around AD 1250 the castle came complete with moat and drawbridge, and therefore, was the perfect place for our overindulged Habsburg friend to fantasize about being his hero, the great dragon slaying knight Sir George. Ferdie had much in common with mad King Ludwig of Bavaria, wouldn't you say.

Ferdie spared no taxpayer expense in doing a complete neo-gothic remodeling job of the castle. By 1894, the work was complete and ready for the part time habitation of Ferdie and his commoner bride, Princess Sophie. The estate is enormous, although not by Habsburg standards. Wish I could give you the total square meters. The English style grounds are vast and come complete with lakes, gardens, and statues galore. Don't miss the two-faced statue. ( Hmm. I wonder who inspired this art work ).

Tour the chateau exterior, the grounds, and admire the two-faced statue, all free of charge. Three different guided tours of the interior are available.

Zamek Konopiste is just just 2 klicks southwest of Benesov train and bus station. Take either the train or bus to Benesov from Praha. It is cheap and takes about 45 minutes each way. Take a cab or enjoy the walk to Konopiste. See the medieval treasures along the route.

I recommend the Chinese restaurant in Benesov. However, there is a restaurant in the zamek.
