Island in the Stream- Kampa Island and Park
by Ekaterinburg
Kampa Park is over the river towards Mala Strana and to get there you just have to go down the steps on the left of the Bridge as you near that end, or else go all the way across and turn right, almost back under the bridge. If you take the second option you'll cross over the Devil's Stream, the branch of the River Vltava which runs around Kampa, making it effectively an island. This is an amazing place, within sight of Charles Bridge and yet the most idyllic, almost rural spot you could imagine. According to the guide books, even on a crowded day in August, you can find some peace and quiet here, and in a city like Prague, this is really good to know. You can catch the river cruises just near the bridge, walk in the park, have a drink at a riverside cafe, enjoy the architecture in the adjoining streets and squares or just do absolutely nothing. Kampa lends itself very well to doing nothing and the large drooping trees just beg you to sit in their shade and gaze across the river. Charles Bridge looks very different from down here and it seems quite removed from the clamour and human traffic above. The photos show most of the aspects of Kampa that I've just mentioned.
The House at the Black Madonna.

This palace was built in 1912. Today it houses the Museum of Czech Cubism.
On the first floor of this building there is the Grand Cafè Orient. It is a nice and odd place to have a drink.
Address; Celetna ul, 34. Stare Mesto. Prague 1.

Sedlec (Kutna Hora)
This is an hour away on the intercity trains that go to Brno from the main train station in Prague. The notice boards are a complete mystery but the information desk will print you a useful timetable.
The cemetery of the Sedlec monastery became the burial place for the rich after the abbot took a handful of sacred earth and sprinkled it at the monastery. After plague and war the cemetery was enlarged but later some parts were abolished, stacking the bones up outside the chapel. Eventually the bones were used to decorate the Ossuary by a woodcarver, Francis Rint. You don’t need to be religious to appreciate it - very creepy!
