Day trip from Prague

by packtarl

Apart from Kutna Hora and Plzen, both of which I have visited , can anyone suggest anywhere to go for a few hours whilst in Prague. I don't want to travel any further than an hour and a half by bus or train and it dosn't have to be full of fancy architecture etc. Just somewhere nice to have a walk round and have a drink and a bite to eat. All suggestions welcome.

Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad) certainly worth a visit: is an old thermal town (the biggest in Czech Republic) where you could have some pleasant walks and enjoy very beautiful views of Krušné Hory mountains.
Moreover there are many handicraft and Bohemian crystal shops, bars and nice restaurants in the pedestrian area and the city center, and one of most beautiful panoramas from Diana's Tower.
I loved this charming town, i's only about one hour driving from Prague.
Hope you could visit it!

I will need bus or train. Which is best for Karlovy Vary? How long is journey?

This is the Czech railway site, where you can reserve your ticket online:
http://www.cd.cz/static/eng/index.htm

And also see:
http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlakyautobusy/spojeni/ (here you can check and choose the better departure time and all connections)

I went to Karlovy Vary by car and it took about one hour, but it seems train takes a bit more time, about 2 hours.

And there's also a direct bus from Prague Florenc station to Karlovy Vary terminal MHD (journey time 2.15 h., single ticket price about 4.50 euros)

Anyway, you can find some other suggestion about day trips from Prague at Czech Tourism site:

Yes I agree Karlstejn Castle would be a great choice for a few hours outside Prague..it is a nice walk going up to the castle and finding lots of antiques in the little stores...nice picture-taking too..

Travel Tips for Prague

Besides the gorgeous view from...

by banshee

Besides the gorgeous view from the Charles Bridge (Karlov Most) at night, my hands down favorite thing about Prague were the Metro stations. Some, particulary Andel station, are tributes to Communist architecture and design. Plus, there's something about fast-moving, far-reaching escalators that moves me. Also, for you Radiohead fans, track 5 (I think) on the ep 'How Am I Driving?' starts out with the Metro announcement, next stop, Jirho z Podebrad. Definately worth experiencing. Not to sound like a frat boy, but cheap beer is up there. But not above my neighbor Jiri, the cantankerous old geezer whose favorite hobby seemed to be yelling at me about something to do with bread. I think. My Czech is pretty bad.

JOSEFOV -- JUGENDSTIL ARCHITECTURE

by LoriPori

In the early 20th century, the Jewish neighbourhood was almost completely demolished. Many buildings were replaced and built in the JUGENDSTIL style of architecture.
The accompanying picture shows one such beautiful building in the "Jugendstil - Style" of architecture. It was located in the Josefov Section of Prague right across from the Old-New Synagogue. It appeared to me, to be a very expensive apartment building.

Public toilets!!

by Deus_ultima

Most public toilets have a fee which is usually writen at the entry. There are 2 prices depending on what you need to do..
:S

Sometimes the person 'guarding' the bathroom has the toilet paper which she will give you in very sparse quantity! :)

And believe it or not, even thought after convertion the charges don't even appear on the dollar scale, I had an argument with a 'toilet lady' about because I thought she was trying to surcharge me..silly tourists..

Excursion to the Countryside

by JohnMJ

A nice and easy morning or afternoon trip is to take a local train to Karlstejn Castle. From the tiny train station you walk towards the river and then to the town. Maybe a total distance of 1 Km. You walk up the hill with little shops and restaurants. The Castle is on top, of course, of the hill. Tour buses tend to converge late morning, so avoid that time. The castle is closed from noon to 1 PM

The townhall of Nove Mesto

by globetrott

On Charles Square / Karlovo Namesti you may find the townhall of Nove Mesto ( on the right of my pic with the tower )
It is used today for concerts and other performances.
On the left of my pic is the technical university.

Other place of interest on Karlovo Namesti is the church of St.Ignacius / Kostel sv Ignace and closeby in the street called "Resslova" you will see the church of St.Kyrill and St.Methodius / Kostel sv Cyrila a Metodeje.

You may take the subway and get out at station "Karlovo Namesti"
