Train Tickets from Prague to Vienna

by SyNkRoNiZe

hi, wld like to know if anyone has experience buying train tickets online for journey from Prague to Vienna?

I bought 2 "seat reservations only" yesterday online thinking that's all that's needed. However, after doing CZK conversion to EUR, I realise that it's way too cheap of a ticket to go to Vienna via train - i.e. CZK70 per person.

So I'm left to think that (and the website isn't very clear) I need to actually purchase the "ticket" as well and that the "seat reservation only" option is a top-up or guarantee that i have the seat that i want on the carriage. Am I right in this aspect?

And is it normal to have 2 pdf documents - 1 for train and 1 for seat reservation in this case? Any help is most appreciated!

hi

thanks, so i guess i have to produce 2 print outs for each person on that day, eh? 1 for ticket and 1 for seat reservation.

i'm only travelling to prague this sunday and will be there for 5 days. i thought it wld be easier for me to buy them online since buying at the train station may be a bit more expensive?

70 CZK is 2,79 Euro. This is just 'reservation' price I believe.

It's not necessary to buy it on-line because the price wouldn't be any cheaper than buying from station. No reservation of seats is needed.

BTW. Which web site did you use?

Was it of Ceske drahy, because that's their official railways web site? Because for example there it says 486 CK per person in 2nd class on Sat 4th Sept at 13.39 departure.

Hi

thanks!

i used this website to buy the tickets:

https://www.cd.cz/eshop/international/search_int.aspx?tt=3

initially i surfed on Eurorail website but man they really rip ppl off with their prices!

ok, thats CZ drahy web site. Only buy from them if you want to but like said before, if you need it for your piece of mind... otherwise just drop at the station and buy from the ticket counter.
The price may differ from train to train and class (fast train, how many connections or direct, 1st or 2nd class... etc).

If you're younger than 26 you may even get 'student discount'. Sometimes it works with Int. student card. Or if you're older, then senior discount. Doesn't cost anything if you ask :)

Various Tips

Soda is normally served without ice. If you want ice, it will be provided in a separate glass.
When shopping, prices on items already include taxes.
Tip-10%. You can pay for meals on credit card, but tips must be paid with currency.
We were told by local that tap is fine to drink. We didn’t have any issues.

very beautiful cathedral

by LisaPinUp

Unfortunately, but fair enough, you cannot take pictures in St. Vitus' cathedral. It's a huge place with extremely nice glass paintings in the windows and everything you could expect from an old place like that.
If I remember correctly, there was no charge for it. I'm not sure. But there were huge amounts of people going there at the same time! It's probably the easiest to get up to the castle area where this cathedral is also located, when you go thru the old town area and up the long stairs near where the Kafka's place was.

TOUCH THE GOLDEN DOG

by LoriPori

It is a local custom to stop at the statue of St. John Nepomuk located on the Charles Bridge. We saw all these people lining up in front of the statue to TOUCH THE GOLDEN DOG. A panel located beneath the statue depicts a soldier and his dog and for some strange reason if you rub it and make a wish, your wish will come true. OK I'm game. I rubbed it. My wish for it to stop raining didn't come true. I think it's just a ploy from the city public works department to keep the statues clean as this was the only clean spot on the whole statue. Duh!

Botanical Gardens

by Imbi

A large set of greenhouses and gardens where students in beards and woolly jumpers occasionally cast a glance the way of one of the millions of cacti or the half dozen other tropical plants. You can also wander around the grounds and a multitude of paths leading nowhere; the best sort.
Address is Praha 7, Nádvorní 134
