Traveling from Prague to Budapest

by ojuhath

What's the best way to travel between travel between these two cities? I would like to stop over Vienna for a day or so. Is the train most convenient? or flying is better? Any help with price and location would be helpful.

Re: Traveling from Prague to Budapest

we took the direct train from Prague to Budapest, 7 hours, easy and convenient. The direct train is via Bratislava. Cheaper than flying by a long shot and when you take into account time before airplane boarding not that much longer.

Thank you for the reply. Is there a train that stops at Vienna? I was thinking to swing by that city as well. How about driving between these cities?

i did not do this myself and therefore without direct knowledge. but there are trains from Prague to Vienna to Bratislava to Budapest, some of which will be direct and others with a transfer. there is another current thread about prague to vienna by train.

Travel Tips for Prague

Charles Bridge

by littlesam1

There is much written about the Charles Bridge. There are articles about the various statues on the bridge. There are stories about this history of the bridge itself. And then there is the tourist whimscial information. Notice the two guys in hats. They are touching the statue in the picture. According to legend you are to touch this statue for good luch when crossing the bridge. The statue has a very worn area that is very shiney from all of the hands that touch it daily. Once more they guys in hats fall victim to being just typical tourists.

Be nice, they're not snobs.

I've read comments and reviews of some people on travel sites about rudeness. For instance, some staff or hotel personnel are rude or not helpful at some hotels in Prague, like reception lacking interest in providing assistance.

Maybe true maybe not, in my opinion and experience, it sometimes boils down to you (or me).

Both the two receptionists at the hotel I've stayed at for 3 nights are definitely friendly and helpful, maybe not the over-friendly kind of attitude but juz the kind I really need. They give me help and the right answers to my questions. They even write instructions on small paper on the names of tram stations where I want to go and help me find my way on the map. I had few minutes too of chats every morning before exploring the city and in the evening.

Maybe because I give them careful attention so I get twice the attention back.

Be nice, be modest...Don't you think it's a universal rule? You get what you give.

Depending on weather

by jo104

A wheeled suicase is fine although there are sometimes steps only out of the metro & cobbled streets therefore my advice is a backpack. Good walking shoes, in winter shoes with a good grip & waterproof, a good waterproof windbreaker. In warmer weather take something to cover your shoulders if going into Jewish synagogues. Depending on what price hotel you stay toilet paper may equate to sandpaper so take your own fluffy soft stuff :-) You can purchase medicine like headache tablets at the chemists but language problems may make this more difficult. camera of course the scenary makes for some spectacular shots. Be careful with your camera equipment smart clothes if you go to the opera / theatre.

A pleasant side trip

A nice half day trip. An old silver town with some interesting archetecture. We took a tour from Prague which included lunch. Reasonable price. Included was a visit to the Osiary (bone chapel) Quite macabre!

Hungerwall / Hladova zed

by globetrott

This wall around Petrin-park was built and financed by King Charles IV from 1360-62, in order to give work and food for the population in these bad times of hunger.
About 1200 meters of the wall are still to be seen of the wall that once was built between the river Moldau / Vltava and the monastery Strahov
