Linz to Cesky Krumlov

by josie_lo

I am planning on travelling from Hallstatt to Linz and then going to Cesky Krumlov. I have read that the train from Linz to CK takes around 5-6 hours. As for shuttle buses they need to be booked in advance. But as my travel plans are subject to change, I cannot decide on which to book the shuttle. Does anyone know if there is a public bus available from Linz to CK and how much that will cost and how much time it takes? Thanks

I think you should be ok to book 24 hrs in advance or even the same day.
Here's is some info from Lobo shuttle website:

SHUTTLE FROM LINZ TO CK
Shuttle LOBO leaves Linz at 12:30pm and 2:30pm every day. The place of departure is at the main railway station of Linz. The price is 450 CZK per person. Average journey time: 1 hour and 15 min.

There are few direct trains every day from Linz to Ceske Budejovice. The journey takes from 2.5 to 3 hours. From Ceske Budejovice you can easily take a bus as the main bus station and train station are just over the main road. The bus station is on the top of the roof of the shopping center Mercury so it might take you about 5minutes. The buses from Ceske Budejovice to Cesky Krumlov go pretty often. The rain timetable as well as the bus schedules you can check at: http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/vlakyautobusy/spojeni/

The price for the train is about 450CZK, bus from CK to CB is 32-40CZK.

The price for the shutle bus can be from 400CZK and takes about 1.5hour.

If you prefer shuttle bus, it is necessesary to book them in advance. There are few companies offering the transport from Linz to CK:

Travel Tips for Cesky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov / Krumau

by globetrott

Cesky Krumlov was built at a very special place :

The river Vltava (Moldau) makes an almost 320 degree turn around a peninsula and high rocks on the banks of the river make a perfect place to build a huge castle. When you look at my "picture-map" , you may see the peninsula in the middle, with the famous town square and lots of great old buildings.

On top of the pic you see the huge castle, built on 2 rocks, that are combined with a system of arcades, that helps to walk from one rock to the other easily and without steps.

And the blue line is the river coming from the south, making the bend around the peninsula and going on north, where another small river will flow into it just behind the castle.

Cesky Krumlov: The White Lady of Bohemia

by Intrepidduck

One only has to observe the many door ways of larger homes to see evidence of the Rozmberks royal five pettled seal.

The Rozmberks were once the most powerful family in southern Bohemia. However like many royal families of yesterday, and today might I say, were riddled with tyrany and tradgedy. The most legendary true character of the Rozmberks was none other than Perchta of Rozmberk. In 1449 her father Oldrich II married her of to Jan of Lichtenstein, she at the age of 20 years and against her will. Lichtenstein's interests were only in her large dowry and he took her away from her beloved Cesky Krumlov to live her lonely years at Mikulov.

She pleaded to her family numerous times and some 92 letters she sent to her family survive. She died tragically of plague, aged 49 years, and this is when the legend started she thus becomming the so called White Lady of Bohemia. Her ghost was said to inhabit her former home castles.

There is a good system of 6 big parking-places around the peninsula in the centre.

Simply follow the signs - I had a great parking close to "Mestske Sady" - it was under high trees, and I had to pay 25 krones for 1 hour ( motorhome) - a car would have been 15 Krones there.

and 2 people operate the place, 1 at the cash 1 directing you to the parking-spot.

Good location for taking photo

To take a good picture for the castle, you must go outside of the town. When you walk to the public bus to leave Cesky Krumlov, you need to walk to the bus station, because Cesky don't have bus station. You must pass though this spot to have a nice skyline of the town. So, reserve some of your film or memory if you use digital cam. ( The day I pass this spot is a crowdy day, so the photo is not that attractive :-( )

Music and fireworks

by sourbugger

The international music festival runs through July and August. It's been going for about 10 years now.

It begins on the 16th July this year (2004), and I presume that the opening night will contain the free performance and fireworks at about 10.30 - 11PM. The best place to see this is at the foot of the castle on or near the bridge.

It's usually a loud bombastuc piece that they do, like Carmina Burana or the 1812 overture.

You had better book up accommodation fast if you want to be there.

The festival itself takes place at a number of locations, several in the castle or it's grounds. Tickets can be very pricey for the feature events.
