Cesky Krumlov to Krakow

by Aafia

Does anybody know the approximate time it would take to drive from Cesky Krumlov to Krakow in August?

Not quite what you are looking for but....

I did the overnight train from Krakow to Prague in about 7 hours, then went to the bus station and travelled Prague - Cesky in less than 1.5 hours.

CK is a wonderful, fairy-tale town. Allow yourself some time to take it all in.

Thanks, I heard the train is slow and we're by-passing Prague so that helps me get an idea. Thanks. We're spending 3 days in Prague and 2 in Casky Krumlov.

Re: Cesky Krumlov to Krakow

It's almost 600km. Expect at least 7 hours.

You will be driving some minor highways. There is extensive road construction during the summer, so allow 3 additional hours for delays and detours. If you are driving on the autobahns, you need to buy a permit for Czech and another for Poland, or face fines. It can get expensive.

One day in Krumlov is enough. Consider spending the other day in the fascinating city of Brno.

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, we only have 2 weeks. My brother and his family are moving to Budapest so we'll be visiting them. We wanted to avoid the Grand Prix that we didn't know was on when we booked our tickets, so we decided to venture beyond Budapest until the race is over.

"If you are driving on the autobahns, you need to buy a permit for Czech and another for Poland, or face fines."

What he means by "permit" is:

In the Czech Rep a sticker that you attach on the bottom or top right inner side of the winshield. A 7-day sticker with green "D" and validity indicated costs 200 CZK and is (should be) available at any gas station and/or post office.

In Poland the A4 expressway between Wroclaw-Katowice-Krakow has regular toll booths where you pay cash.

Travel Tips for Cesky Krumlov

The revolving auditorium

by Nadia7

Located in the Castle Gardens, it invokes a magical time of amphitheatres, where the night sky and suberb surroundings (in this case the castle gardens and Rococo summer house) seem to amplify the sounds of Mozart, Shakespeare and Dvoøák to name a few.

Go to the website to see the program of the theatre.

Train transport to Cesky Krumlov

by sourbugger

Despite the advertising on the czech railways site the railway journeys around here will not win any prizes for speed. It can take 4 to five hours to make it from Prague.

It is also possible to get to C Krumlov from Graz. This therefore makes it feasible to make Cesky Krumlov a stop-off point on a longer european journey - it is not at a dead end!

Wechselstube Restaurant and Pension

by nature_girl

We actually found this place while looking for Na Louzi in Cesky Krumlov (we found it, but it was too full!). We found the Wechselstube Restaurant by following a little tunnel back off the main street. There is a small half covered courtyard back there with a cozy fireplace. Upon ordering, we realized that our meat would be cooked over that fireplace! Most of us agree that it was our favorite meal of the whole trip. The steak was especially good, especially the marinated steak. Steak on grill!

The Tower

by JetlagCity

Seeing a picture of the castle tower is what made me decide for sure to visit here. The pink, sea-green, and yellow colors just seemed so whimsical! It's a six story gothic tower that's had some Rennaisance elements added later on, with the requisite bells inside and a beautiful clock on top. In the summer you can climb up to the top for 30 korunas (about $1 US at the time, probably a bit more now). You'll find it in the first castle courtyard, right by the castle entrance.

Religious statues are often found.

The Castle forms an impressive background to the Crucifix displayed on the Barber bridge on the way from the old town to the Castle.

The previous photo also taken on Barber bridge shows the extent of the castle as it rises above the town.
