Travel Tips for Brno

Me & Tomas...

by coceng

This was the last photo of me in Brno. Me & Tomas, standing at the bus staion minutes before I departed for Vienna.
By the way, that cigarette that Tomas was holding was the last one for him ! He told me...
Thanks Tomas for showing me around Brno. I love your city & I would come here again. For sure.

SHAME on you, master Pilgram !!

by globetrott

The old townhall dates back to 1311 and the tower was added in 1489.
The gothic decorations on the tower were made by master Pilgram, and when you click on my picture, you may see that the spire in the midlle looks a bit like master Pilgram drank too much...

There is a certain rumor that he made it that way, simply because he was not propperly payed by the city of Brno / Brünn.
That was at least a funny way of protest and the protest is still working and everybody knows about the greedy officials of that time.

B.t.w.:Master Pilgrim was born in Brno / Brünn and also the architect of the interior of St.Stephens-cathedral / Stefansdom in Vienna.
And when you take a look at the pulpit in Stephansdom, you may see a small sculpture of a face looking out of a window - it is master Pilgram himself and it is called "Der Fenstergucker"

Bystrc

by eledhwen

A town district at the north-west of Brno by the river Svratka and under the Brno dam. It is mentioned in the year 1373, but it is definitely older, Bystrc belonged to the castle Veveri. The church of St. John the Baptist at the square has a Romanesque core from the 1st half of the 13th century. The aisle was vaulted in the 16th century and the tower was built at the same time. The chancel was demolished in the year 1843 and the aisle was extended to the east, later were made other modifications. A ZOO was opened in the year 1953 at the Mnisi hora (Monk's hill) with a tract of 30 hectars, there are about 600 animals. A monument made by M.Axman in the year 1988 reminds of a local native, a painter and a sculptor, Jakub Obrovsky, further one is dedicated to a Brno's painter Frantisek Foltyn. To the south from the municipality you will find in the forrest over the stream a scenic small lake with a spring and banks, not far away in the forrest Hobrtenky you can find preserved boundary stones from the year 1589.

Directions
From the city centre take the tram No.1 or 11 going to Ecerova or Rakovecka and disembark at the station Zoologicka zahrada. It takes you about 20 minutes and you will need a 13 CZK ticket.

Vyskov - a museum of army airplanes

by globetrott

Vyskov is about 40 km east of Brno / Brünn and is a great and interesting place to visit for all those people who are interested in
Eastblock airplanes, tanks and Helicopters
You simply have to leave the highway and drive on direction Prirov and will pass by an old airfield that displayes certainly hundreds of old planes, helicopters, tanks and other military vehicles that you would never have been able to see during the times of the Communists.
Take road Nr. 47 and drive from Vyskov towards the east and you will pass by it.
Opening-times :
Saturday + Sunday
09.00a.m. - 12.00 noon and 02.00p.m.- 06.00p.m.
I saw it just from outside, and took these pics through the fence !

ELEKTRA

by lehmus about ELEKTRA

Well, they offer delicious lunch-sallads.. But otherwise the place always made me feel like if I was sitting in a factory or something. Probably because of the steel staircase... And there was always too much light!
