how about getting to Vienna

by necrodup

I've tried booking a Eurolines bus to Vienna from Brno but the Czech site says the line doesn't exist. It appears on the Austrian page but you have to buy the ticket via the Czech side. Any advice for Eurolines or other, (cheap) ways to get to Vienna on the 10th of November? Cheers.

Take whatever express bus is available from Brno to Wien ( try Wien instead of Vienna as your listed destination ). Nothing magic about Eurolines. Go with a Czech transport company. Very nice buses at a much lower price.

Travel Tips for Brno

Do you like cemeteries? I do! They are quiet and peaceful and some gravestones are interesting and there are trees and squirrels etc. From the pictures you can see that normaly people wear black clothes at funerals. If it is a church funeral, then a priest is talking at the burial. I won't comment on that :/

Francouzsky Cisar Napoleon I

by globetrott

Napoleon I was living in the augustinian monastery for a few days in 1805 and this plate in front of the monastery still reminds of that visit.
The inscription is b.t.w. only in french and czech - it might be impossible to read it on my picture in the small pics of VT.... I copied the text for everyone, beeing interested to read it :

L'empereur Napoleon I
séjourna dans cette maison
du 20 au 28 novembre 1805
du 7 au 12 décembre 1805
et du 16 au 18 septembre 1809
Il y ayait établi
le quartier general
de la grande

when reading that text, I get the feeling it was not really a vacation that took him to Brno / Brünn, but rather his special kind of business...

Cerna Pole

by eledhwen

It is a part of the district Brno-north, it lies to the north-east from the city center nex to the district Husovice. It has arisen as a Brno suburb as lately as the end of the 19th century. It preserved the character of high-quality residential zone with villadom till present time. In Cernopolni street you will find the Tugendhat villa, an exceptional functionalism villa built for the family Tugendhat during the year 1929-30 in accordance with the project the world important architect L.Mies van der Rohe, who designed also the inner equipment and the furniture. As a monument of the world modern architecture, the villa was in the December 2001 registered into the World cultural and natural heritage UNESCO. There is a stable exposition installed inside. But you are not allowed to take pictures inside. If you would like to visit the villa please do it till the end of October 2006, after that the villa will be closed for reconstruction work for approx. 3 years.

From the city centre take the tram No.3, 5 or 9 going to Stara Osada or Lesna and disembark at the station Detska nemocnice or Tomanova. It takes you about 5-10 minutes and you will need a 8 CZK ticket.

Olomouc - east of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Olomouc / Olmütz is mainly known as the origin of a quite stincky cheese ( Olmützer ), BUT it also has a really great town-square with excellent buildings and certainly the biggest plague-column of all over Czechia.
Don't miss the 3 lovely fountains there - my favorite one was the one with the turtles.
You may get to Olomouc over the highway within an hour maybe.

On the Buses

by Vcela

Travelling by bus is generally quicker than train within the Czech Republic.
In Brno the main bus station is Zvonarka. Situated out behind the main train station past Tesco (5/10min walk) just follow the walkway.
I used just go hear on a Saturday and Sunday and just had a look where the next buses were going to, quickly chose, bought a ticket and jumped aboard. It was my little way of getting to know the country, especially Moravia.
(the website listed is Czech - clicking on Jizdni Rady will get English/German timetable).
