DAY TRIP TO BRNO

by packtarl

I will be visiting Brno later this year with some friends on a day trip from Prague. We will have approx 6 hours in Brno.We will arrive by train at the main railway station. Is the railway station in the centre? If not how far is it to walk to the centre? We would prefer to walk as then we will be able to see things as we go along but if we need public transport then we would rather use the trams and buses than taxis so any information on this is welcome. What should we see? We are not too bothered about visiting museums etc.just general sightseeing, although if there is some sort of museum detailing the history of the Bren gun that would be of interest. We really want to have a good look round the centre and see anything of interest. Of course we would also like to have a couple of beers and a meal. Nothing expensive ,just a bar serving Czech food will do ,so any recommendations are welcome.Basically we would like any information at all about visiting Brno as we have never been before. Many thanks.

Hello,

if you have 6 hours in Brno, it is ok, it is not so big, so i think you can see the main sights. The train station is right in the center, then you can go to visit Petrov cathedral and Nove sady (park in front of the cathedral), Spilberk castle and then walk back to Freedom square and have a meal and beer. There are many pubs, i would recommend Pegas http://www.hotelpegas.cz/.
Enjoy your trip!

Travel Tips for Brno

The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul

by penny_g

The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is located in the center of Brno on the top of Petrov hill. People say that it is located on the presumed site of the former Brno castle. Originally, the church has been built as a Romanesque basilica and in the 13 c. it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. Its current neo-Gothic form dates from the turn of this century. The St. Peter and Paul cathedral creates the city's typical cathedral.

Enjoy my pics of it.

Alligator at the Old Town Hall

by Astralka

The so-called "dragon" hanging from the ceiling in the corridor is actually not a dragon, but an alligator given to the city as a gift by somebody, who I do not know (in 1608).

The story about the Wagon Wheel I got from the webpage www.frommers.com

Local lore has it that a carpenter named Jirí Birek from nearby Lednice wagered with locals that he could chop down a tree, fashion a wheel from it, and roll it the 40km (25 miles) to Brno all in a single day. Well, he managed to do it, but the townspeople, certain that one man couldn't do so much in 1 day, decided that Birek must have had assistance from the devil. With this mindset, they refused to ever buy his works again.

Hockey stadium Hala Rondo

by Veroali

Every other week hosts Hala Rondo a hockey match. Of course don't expect NHL, but Czechs are very good hockey players and i have to remind we won the Olympic games in Nagano :-))) . Brno team is called Kometa Brno. The stadium serves also for any performances or shows.

Zelena Hora - 50km north-west of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

Zelena Hora is one of the most famous examples of the so-called "Baroque Gothic"-style.
A formerly Gothic church was rebuilt and re-decorated in baroque style.
The whole of the church follows certain rules and symbolisms :
most of the rooms and ornaments have 5 edges, only the outside wall of the cemetery has 10 edges.
The church was consecrated to the National saint of the Czech Republic :

Jan Nepomucky / Johann Nepomuk

He was thrown into the Moldau-river from Charle's bridge in Prague in may 16th, 1393.
The legends says, that he was not willing to tell the king Wenzel IV any secrets, his wife told him during the confession.

Telc - 90 km west of Brno / Brünn

by globetrott

When you are in the area of Brno / Brünn, make sure you will also see Telc / Tetsch as it is one of the most beautiful and most interesting small towns in Czechia.
The triangle townsquare is totally surrounded by great baroque buildings, 95% of them were recently restored and are part of the UNESCO-World-heritage !!
