Where not to stay ...
Without putting too fine a point on it, Hotel Thermal typifies everything that was bad about Communist era architecture and planning. It is an utterly hideous concrete monstrosity that is a blight on this otherwise gorgeous town and, to add insult to injury, a whole terrace of beautiful period buildings was demolished to facilitate its construction. No wonder Dvorak has turned his back on it ...
This hotel is a popular conference venue. At the time of my visit, the rooms were fine, if a bit tired and dated and the conference facilities were similarly functional but nondescript. The service was apathetic and indicated that sadly the architecture was not the only throwback to the former regime.
The hotel's one highlight is a gorgeous swimming pool - and impressive structure which has been effectively cantilevered onto the adjacent slope of the valley. The view from here out over the town and valley beyond is breathtaking, and on a hot summer's day, when the valley itself can feel claustrophobic and airless, the swimming pool attracts a refreshing breeze.

I didn't actually stay at the Hotel Thermal, but I did have lunch there and I went for a swim in the outdoor thermal pool. From the outside, the hotel doesn't look like much. It has a very definitive Communistic look to it. But the inside looked okay. A little sparse and probably needs to be updated, but I wouldn't complain overall.
The thermal pool was really good. Being American, it's kind of weird for me to be in a setting where women just openly walk around naked, but after I got used to that things were fine. It was cool to swim outside in February.
