Johann Wolfgang von Goethe came quite often to Marianske Lazne / Marienbad and it was here, where he first met Miss Ulrike Baroness von Levetzow in 1821.
Two years later he asked her to marry him ( he was 74 then and she was 19 ) and she refused to... ;-((
On his way back home Goethe wrote his famous " Elegie (elegy) von Marienbad "
Poor Geheimrat von Goethe - at least there is a Goetheplatz and several Goethe-monuments in Marienbad today
