The Grandhotel Pacifik offers room, board and treatments, specializing in motor functions, breathing, and other ailments. (The full-pension price includes the room, three delicious meals per day in an elegant dining room, and most treatments.)
But the person looking for a peaceful setting for a week or two of relaxation could not choose a better spot.
Our large comfortable room offered a base from which to venture out for massages, water exercise, physical therapy for a post-surgical condition, and afternoon coffee at one of many cosy cafes.
Evenings can be quiet, but most large hotels in the area have weekly concerts or performances. One night a string trio played a variety of pieces, from Mozart to Sinatra, and the next week we laughed at a mime's amusing show. The city theater offers evenings of orchestral or choral music, as do some of the churches.
It's a wonderful place for those who don't require beaches or discos in order to relax.

Obviously the most salient characteristic of Marienbad (the old German name) and its hotels is the possibility of therapy for the tired mind and body. But the scenery gives peace as well; the manicured parks full of lovely gardens, the Edwardian architecture, and the tall forested hills surrounding the town create a charming atmosphere.
The woods feature many pathways, some with educational signs and exhibits, where visitors stroll on sunny afternoons. The Pacifik arranges field trips several afternoons a week, both to nearby sites like Count Metternich's palace and Tepla Monastery, and to Karlovy Vary (old German Carlsbad) and Prague.
