july 3rd, 1866 - The battle of Koeniggraetz
by globetrott
A few miles west of Hradec Kralove one of the most cruel battles of the 19th century took place in july 3rd 1866....
...and Austria lost against Prussia :-((( Every year at that date you may still watch the battle beeing "performed" by hobby-soldiers in historic uniforms and weapons.
I have not been at the battlefield myself so far, as there is not a lot to be seen , except around july 3rd.
On my self-made postcard you may see what Hradec Kralove / Koeniggraetz looks like today .

The church of the Assumption of Holy Mary
by globetrott
The interior of the church of the Assumption of Holy Mary was my favorite in Hradec Kralove.
It simply looks great with all the great baroque ornaments and paintings.
It is just a pity, that you may not really enter the church, except for the church services, but you have to look through an iron-fence next to the back-entrance.
At least I was able to take a picture...
The entrance to the cathedral
by globetrott
Have a look at the great back-entrance to the cathedral.
I saw the gate that way, when I arrived the first evening of my stay, when the cathedral was locked already.
During the day it will be open and you may enter freely and take your pics without restrictions. ( unfortunately some other churches in Bohemia have a sign of "no photography")
A lot of great baroque buildings
by globetrott
Around Velke namesti / the main square of Hradec Kralove you will see plenty of great baroque buildings, most of them with the typical arcades, that are really a great help for shoppers and tourists during the rain and when even when the sun is extremely hot...
