Travel Tips for Plzen
Emergency Siren Test
Daily at noon once or twice a week for about 5 minutes the "emergency siren" test sounds across Plzen. It is a bit eerie and made me a little bit nervous the first time I heard it. It fuels the urge to hide, be safe, and hit the shelter.
The theatre of Plzen is named after the great dramatist Josef Kajetan Tyl and it is under reconstruction at the moment, but it still looks great !
It reminds me a bit of the Vienna Opera, that was built at the same time, and of course
architects always tried to copy great buildings from the capital ( at the time , when Plzen
was part of the Austrian empire )
China in Pilsen
Shanghai is located in a cellar and thereby a little hard to find. Furthermore, the rather darkish atmosphere is not really what one might call a nice place to eat. On the other hand, the food is good and tastes typically Chinese-restaurant like. I had some pork dish with a sweet-and-sour sauce which was certainly tasty.
great mahagony doors
All the walls are covered with mahagony and the ornaments are made with ivory and gold - to an extent that would be impossible and to to afford today.
But at the best times of these cafes there were obviously enough rich people in Plzen,
beeing able to afford places like this !
Church of St Bartholomew & nam Repliky
Dominating the main square of Plzen, nam Repliky, is the Church of St Bartholomew. There are some nice stained glass windows inside and the tower offers some excellent views across the city and area.
