Himmelbjerget Hotel: Hotel on Heaven Mountain

Hotel Himmelbjerget is not only the name of a mountain, but a hotel which is located at a higher altitude than any other hotel in Denmark. Sitting upon a rocky spot of the mountain, the Himmelbjerget Hotel was originally built in 1922. (It does have somewhat of a nice location in the Danish Lakes District. By some standards the hotel is considered a One-Star, but the view of the lakes has to make it at least a two-star!!) The hotel has had only minor renovations since then, but rooms still retain some of their original paneling and accessories. Twin beds and writing tables make up the furniture. Some rooms have terraces or balconies with views. The hotel has a restaurant and cafeteria, a bar, laundry & dry-cleaning service and a childrens' playground.

After ordering a small meal, we went through the cafeteria line and then found a table in the dining room. It was nice taking a break there and talking to some fellow travelers after walking around the moutain. Although I was able to see the lobby, I was not able to see any of the rooms in the hotel. I can only say that it looked quite acceptable and had a charming little facade. One thing I would find as a problem is that none of the hotel's 18 rooms come with a private bath apparently.

Prices for a double room including breakfast ran about 599 DKK or $93 in 2005. But check current prices and specials on the internet.

Unique Quality: Ask for a room with a view. The hotel is only a few minutes walk down hill from the Himmelbjerget Tower & Rostrum and the other monuments and the lovely woods on the mountain itself. The Danish Lake District is a destination in itself.

Himmelbjerget can be reached by taking the popular, "Hjejlen" ("Golden Plover") historic, but small passenger steamship from Silkeborg by way of lake (Silkeborg Langso). Nice way to get to Himmelbjerget !!

Arhus Camping-site: a great place for a camping-vacation

It was back in 1964 that we first had been in Arhus and at that time my parents were travelling in that small Ford Cortina with a small trailer. 2 grownups and 5 children inside that small car and living in 2 tents was a lot of fun for us children, but certainly not for our parents.
On my 1st picture is the tent of my brother Leo and me. The tent on my 2nd picture was for the rest of the family.
All of these pics are scanned from a super-8-movie, sorry for the bad quality.

Unique Quality: In 2005 we returned to that camping-site and found it even better, with plenty of huts to be rented (BUT we should have booked them in advance). Camping is well organized in Arhus with great recreation-areas, only the beach is not very sandy, but rather rough gravel.
Camping is certainly a good alternative to the expensive hotels in Arhus. The only affordable hotels used to be GET IN and SLEEP IN.

Hotel Legoland: For Lego Lovers!!

A family in our neighborhood had 2 little boys who were absolute fanatics about Legos---I think they had every set known to man. My own son had a few sets of Legos himeself, like the smaller pirate versions and a few others so I am definitely familiar with the draw of Legos.

We did not stay in this hotel, but I thought it was amusing that Legoland had its own hotel like we would find at Disney World. Though I don't think the Legoland Hotel is of the same standard as those found at Disney World for the most part, it does have great advantages for families visiting Legoland.

It does have a Legoland design theme (how about Lego pillowcases!?!) and its 154 rooms can accommodate alot of young & old Lego fanciers. Legoland Hotel rooms provide amenities such as phones, irons, hairdryers, and trouser presses. They even offer activities and exercises centered around, what else? Legos! The hotel has game rooms, swimming pool, restaurant and bar.

Guests arriving from Billund Airport will be thrilled to be provided transportation in their very own Legoland bus!

Unique Quality: Lego afficionados will probably love this place regardless, but the Legoland bus and the Legoland exercises and activities have to be really exciting to all the kids.

If you are attending a conference at the Legoland Hotel, admission to Legoland is free during your stay---now this is a real plus!!

We stayed in the cheapest...

We stayed in the cheapest place we could find: The Arhus City Sleep In. It was quite an adventure! Not a lot of tourists stay here, it is more of a temporary lodging for people who are looking for housing in the area. We met some very nice Danish guys here who took us out for a beer. There were 20 beds in our room with individual lockers available. All the occupants of the room were male, excluding my friend and me. Some were snorting cocaine, some were passed out drunk, and one guy from Latvia kept screaming in a language no one understood. He also drank from my bottle of water, so I let him keep it.
At the time, to sleep in the dorm room, it was about 12 USD per night per person. As that was 5 years ago, it could well be more by now. Double rooms are also available at a higher price.

Unique Quality: Community kitchen facilities are available. Bring your own food!

Of course you could do without a picture of the view from the Britannia hotel. This hotelroom shows you a wonderfull old building in Esbjerg. Without going out of your hotel you already have done some site seeing.
