Our first experience with a Danhostel proved interesting. Very easy to find, we had no trouble rolling in just in time for check-in. Service was efficient if not the happiest I've ever had. We got a room in one of the many Bornholm style "holiday camp" annexes in the hostel yard whilst some rooms were in the main building. The annex had toilets and showers but the kithchen was in the main building.
We found the room was quite gloomy and had a "musty" smell. At the time we said to each other that this was probably the most basic hostel we had ever been in together and certainly with our daughter. Having said that, it was clean enough and the rest of the hostel was very nice. A short downhill walk takes you into Sandvig itself and its restaurants and Spar supermarket.
The yard is great. Lots of benches make it a social place and we fell asleep to the sound of Germans playing the harmonica. On a warm and sunny evening, it must be the essence of what hostel life should be about. There is a small playground for children and also a barbecue near the entrance. The lounge in the main building is veeery cosy and the supplement breakfast is superb and smartly laid out with fresh fruit and everything you could want. Behind the house is a panorama in the form of one of the water filled quarries around Hammeren, which gives a dramatic backdrop with birdlife to look at (enlarge picture to see).
