Travel Tips for Helsingør

Ferry to Sweden.

by Dizzyhead

Cheap beer. Swedish people in the south of sweden go here just to buy cheap beer and other alcohol. They usually sell outside the boats and you can also buy a waggon to carry home all your bought beer.

Oresund strait

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The city of Helsingor stands in the bottleneck of the Oresund strait. Only 4 kilometers of water separate Denmark from Sweden.

Oresund always was famous for an abundance of fish, and, according to medieval eyewitnesses, there was so many fish that sometimes it prevented vessels to pass the strait. But for not clear reasons fish began to leave to the north.

It was an accident for Denmark because its treasury kept on fishing in medieval times.

A Singaporean Production in Kronberg Castle

by bpacker

I'm very proud to say that one of our acclaimed Singapore theatre directors, Ong Keng Sen, staged a performance in Kronberg Castle once! Since it was a site-specific performance, the play took place in different rooms, dungeons and the central courtyard of Kronborg Castle. The cast came from all over Asia and wore ethnic inspired costumes.
Needless to say, the performance took Scandinavia by storm. You can read about it in the link below.

Kronborg Slot - The Casemates

by ValbyDK

When I was a child, the casemates beneath Kronborg were the highlights of my visits to the old castle. The huge underground system of dark tunnels and rooms was very fascinating, but also a little scary for a young boy… Today, I still find a walk through the casemates interesting and fascinating – but not so scary anymore…

The casemates originally housed the stables and the castle prison, but were also used as quarters for the soldiers in times of war and they were spacious enough to house around 1000 men and their provision for a six-week siege.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, the casemates have been home of the statue of Holger Danske (Ogier the Dane). Here in the dark, he is slumbering with his arms folded on top of his sword – but don’t get fooled, he is always ready to meet any enemy: A myth says when Denmark is threatened by a foreign enemy, the statue will become flesh and blood, and Holger Danske will rise up to defend the nation. Where was he in 1940 when the Germans occupied our country?

Karmeliterkloster

by Kuznetsov_Sergey

The monastery Karmeliterkloster is one of the most escaped medieval monasteries of Scandinavia.

They say that a mistress of Christian II whom contemporaries considered a witch was buried there in the XVI century.

There is the Museum of history of the city (St. Anna Gade, 36) near the monastery. It is opened 12.00-16.00.
