Travel Tips for Nyborg

Nyborg - Old castle and a small Venice

by Obak81

"Nyborg"

Is the third largest city on Fyn (Funen). Its located on the eastern egde of the island nearby the Fixed link (Storbæltsbroen).
The city has about 16.000 inhabitants (2007). In the city center you can find the old royal castle dating back from 1170.
In recent years a new district has sprung up by the waterside in what used to be an old harbour.

The old city is surrounded by moths, and fortifications serving as a reminder of the cities strategic importance in the control of the danish infrastructure i the past thousands of years.

"A royal place"

Nyborg has been an important place in history because of its position on the coast, which made it easy to reach for noblemen (and other people). The noblemen would gather in the Danehof, Nyborgs castle, and have some discussions and festivities there. Nyborg castle is still there and is the biggest tourist attraction in Nyborg

"Site seeing"

If you are in Nyborg, you should visit Nyborg castle. The castle was built in the late 10th century, the surrounding bastions and fortifications were built in the 16th century. The bastions are a nice place for a walk.
Also, the church of our lady is worth a visit.

Denmark's Newscastle

"The town where I was born"

Nyborg is the name of the town where I was born, but I have never lived there. Directly translated from danish to english 'Nyborg' actually means Newcastle...like the city in Great Britain.

This city is located at the eastcoast of this big Island I live on in the middle of Denmark named Funen (Fyn in danish).
From here you can enter the huge brigde 'Storebaelts Broen' that connects Funen with Sealand (where you'll find the capital of Copenhagen).

Nyborg is a little cozy town that don't offer huge tourist attractions but has a range of hotels and a nice camp ground at the beach, as well as a nice shopping-street in the center city.
