Dgi-Byens Hotel: Close to Central Train Station    Check Rates

  • When planning our trip/cruise, I found it difficult to find a quad room that was also a reasonable price. Through an on-line reservations company (hotel-advice.com) I found DGI-Byens which had quad rooms and a relatively good price of 1375 DKK (about $225 US) for a mid-summer stay. Most hotels that had quad rooms were much higher. The DGI-BYENS is part of a sports, culture & business center which is located very close to the Central Train Station making it a good base for walking about the city and for transportation. The front desk staff spoke English and were very pleasant & helpful.

A continental breakfast is included with the price of your room and is served at the hotel's restaurant which is not located in the main building, but just next door behind a pretty little outdoor seating courtyard. Rolls, hard-boiled or soft-boiled eggs, cold meats & cheeses, yogurt, cereals, various breads, and danish, coffee & tea are offered.

Because the hotel is part of a multi-use complex, hotel guests have complimentary use of the indoor swimming pools. There are also several other sports venues in or near the building. The part of the building which houses the hotel, unfortunately, has all the ambience of a college dorm. Rooms are located down long, bare halls separated from each other by locked doors. Our room was fairly large with minimal charm, but with a double platform bed which was very comfortable and 2 roll-away beds. The bathroom was large and offered only towels, and a dispenser for body wash and shampoo. If you like to use hand lotion, a shower cap, or bar soap and a washcloth, bring your own as this hotel doesn't provide them. With all this said, the hotel room is much more than just adequate and it does provide tea & coffee-making facilities in the room. The room had beautiful hardwood floors.

**This hotel had no air-conditioning and the windows did not open except one which tilted slightly inward. The room was so hot it was nearly unbearable. We had a small table fan which did little to cool the room down.

**I'm not sure if this is typical for Denmark, but you had to insert your room key in a receptacle on the wall for the electricity to work. When you removed it, all electricity was off.

The hotel has its own website though it is only in Danish: www.dgi-byen.dk/
Another site that has good info. & is in English: www.hotel.denmark.demon.co.uk/dgi.html/

Dgi-Byens Hotel: Average hotel, oustanding swimming centre    Check Rates

  • I had to go to Copenhagen for a business meeting with a very short notice. The hotels that our client suggested were full booked due to a major conference in the city on the same dates, so I had to look for something else, and found this hotel after a bit of search.

I would not mind to return, even not in summer: the rooms have not A/C and it was unusually hot. I really don’t like much A/C so I would not mind... if I could sleep with the windows open! The hotel is right next the train station (that can be very convenient) but if you open the windows there is a lot of noise from trains all day and night (even with the windows closed there was some noise). There was a small fan which really could not cool the room.

    Good points:
    - Location: close to Tivoli Gardens and Train Station
    - Rooms: large and clean, nice modern room decoration (I like Scandinavian minimalism…), very comfortable beds, tea & coffee-making facilities. I cannot say the decoration of the rest of the hotel was so nice indeed, the corridors are so empty that it’s a bit depressing.
    - Excellent breakfast buffet (served in the restaurant outside the hotel: eggs, several types of bread, cold meats, cheeses, yogurt, cereals, fruit juices, coffee & tea).
    - Above all, the excellent spa/sports complex (hotel guests have complimentary use). Unfortunately, I had no time to enjoy a swim this time, but it looked great.
    - The staff was friendly, polite and helpful.

Cons: The bathroom (or better "shower-room), even shiny clean, was too basic (it looked more like a university residence or hostel than a hotel). No complimentary toiletries apart from a dispenser for body wash and shampoo (do not forget to bring with you any other items you may use).

Price was relatively good for Denmark standards, 1250 DKK.

Overall: farily good hotel, functional but impersonal. Excellent swimming center. Noise and lack to A/C to be taken into account depending on your travel dates.

Dgi-Byens Hotel: swimmers palace!    Check Rates

  • Stayed here in Febuary when it was absolutely FREEZING, very friendly staff on check in. Its attached to the a big leisure centre which has a bowling alley and a fantastic swim centre, the weirdest swimming pool that youll ever visit! The rooms were comfertable if a bit small and cost €100 per night for a double room. About a 5 minute walk from train station a main square so its accesable to most places.

The swim centre is brilliant, it has 5 diffrent types of pools from a circular lane one, a hot water pool and a diving pool amongst others. Also has other kind of treatment centres for relaxation and a spa. Although this is a public pool, you get free access all day long for as long as you want!

Dgi-Byens Hotel: DGI Byen - makes the grade... just    Check Rates

  • The DGI Byen hotel is part of a modern cultural complex situated behind Copenhagen's Central Station. The complex contains a public swimming pool, conference facilities, bars, cafes, sports facilities and the hotel. Residents at the hotel get free entry to the swimming pool.

We spent three nights in the DGI Byen, which is comparable to the Novotel chain of hotels in France. The hotel was clean and modern in typical Scandinavian style. Our room didn’t have a view but was a reasonable size with very comfortable beds. There wasn’t a mini bar (rip-off anyway) and limited tea/coffee making facilities. The reception staff were very polite, friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was a typical continental style buffet and was good (especially the Danish pastries!). We also had an evening meal in the restaurant. It lacked a bit of atmosphere and the wine was expensive but the food was excellent. I had the evening's specials for starter and main course so can’t comment on their regular menu but the quality of our food was first class. Even if you weren’t staying at the hotel, I'd recommend the restaurant as a place to eat.

    Criticisms:

There is no private parking for residents. There is a public car park next to the hotel but you have to pay for this (there is no reduction or waiver of charges for hotel residents). So, if you are thinking of driving to Copenhagen and staying at this hotel you should take this into account when estimating costs. You could park in one of the nearby streets but obviously this wouldn't be as secure.

Our room was unbearably warm. There was a temperature control in the room but this didn't appear to work and there was no air conditioning. We tried opening the window the first night but it was very noisy. To their credit, the hotel gave us an electric fan as soon as we complained.

Overall, we thought the hotel was good if slightly impersonal. If it hadn't been for the swimming pool and the other facilities, we would have thought the hotel to be below average, but it just about made the grade.

The swimming complex is excellent! There's a main pool area for serious swimmers, a diving pool area with a climbing wall at one side and a smaller leisure pool area for the younger non-swimmers.

The main pool consists of a large circular swimming “track” with an enclosed pool in the middle - a pool within a pool so to speak. One circuit of the main ring is 100 metres so if you like long distance swimming, you can keep going round and round! If you don’t like swimming in circles, you can always go in the central pool.

The diving area was well supervised and it was good fun watching people trying to get up the climbing wall.

Our children swam every morning in the pool and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
