Group of 24 High School Students/ 24 hours

by ejlorge

Hello all, I am bringing a group of 24 (!) high school students to Copenhagen. We arrive on a Tuesday afternoon and sadly depart Wedesnday afternoon (early April).

(This is part of a longer exchange trip in Sonderborg)

Do you have any ideas of what we could do Tues afternoon (a neighborhood perhaps, to roam around) and then Wed morning (perhaps a small-ish museum, perhaps? Too cold for Tivoli Gardens in early April?

We're open to anything but want a quintessential Copenhagen experience, if possible...

Also, is Copenhagen known for any particular street food, like herring? and or any other specialty products??

I spent a few days in Copenhagen and really loved it. I'm sure the girls would love walking down the main pedestrian shopping street, but that might get them separated and wanting to shop!

One small museum I enjoyed a lot was called The Resistance Museum. It's in a very walkable area near the harbour area, Nyhavn. I noticed many school children there, and it shows how the Danes worked against the Nazis during WWII. The exhibits were quite good. A few blocks away is the Royal Palace and there's a small museum in that enclave, too plus you could then walk to the harbour where the houses are very colorful. There are a lot of small outdoor and indoor restaurants there.

Bon chance!

The most traditional danish street food is the little sussage stands that you find around the center called "pølsevogn".
they sell sussages and hot dogs and so on, and the danes have their own way of preparing them.

For tuesday afternoon i think the students would be happy to raom around the center of town where you have the long pedestrian street called "strøget".
This is the heart of the historical center and also the center of shopping for those who like that.

You might also consider visiting the round tower (rundetårn in danish).
This is a real nice old tower right in the center of town that was used as an astronomical observation point in the past and you have a really good view of Copenhagen from the top.

Tivoli does not start the season until 14th April. A boat trip on the canals in a nice experience.

Agree with Claus on the hot dog stands.

Not far from the center of Copenhagen are the villages of Dragør/Store Magleby. The older section of these towns are historically interesting as well as charming to roam around.

Here there are also a few museums that might be of interest. The Amager Museum, Dragør Museum, both give an idea of the life lived in the earlier days. The Mølsted Museum, offers the works of seascape painter Christian Mølsted.

Travel Tips for Copenhagen

Story of the sculpture of the Little Mermaid

by Leipzig

The brewer Carl Jacobsen visited the show of the Ballett "The Little Mermaid" at the Royal Theatre in 1909. One of the dancers, Ellen Price, impressed him a lot. After the show Jacobsen asked her whether she would pose for a sculptor. She was fascinated and agreed. The sculptor was Edvard Erichsens. When Ellen Price found out that she should pose nude she wanted to reject the agreement. Edvard Erichsen used her face for the sculptor and let his wife pose for the body. In August 23, 1913, the statue was placed at its current location in the harbour district.

H C Andersen

I learnt the most beautiful story about the amazing paper cuts H.C. Andersen was making one freezing winter night in Northern Norway, smoking Danish apple falvoured tabacco and eating biscuits dipped in hot chocolate.
I didn't mean to see his grave, but one summer sunny day I happened to walk past the cemetery and decided to walk in. I was surprised by the quiet, leafy friendliness of the alleys.

Museums for free

by Imaniac

When you are on a tight budget, you might wanna go to Copenhagen on a wednesday. You can get in to all kinds of museums for free on that day. I got free entarnce to the Carlsberg Glyptotek and the Nationalmuseet.

take a stroll from city square...

by carstenj

take a stroll from city square up through Stroget (mall) to Nyhavn, then turn left down Bredgade (Broadway - but really narrow) and catch the Queens Palace. At the end turn left and walk through the old Nyboder (Naval housing build ages ago (in picture)) and proceed to the Kings Park. After that you can sit in a cafe, enjoy a drink and rest a bit.

Statens Museum for Kunst

by ginte

A wonderful museum of paintings!!! I was really excited. Also the design of the museum is quite interesting as you can see an old building inside the mordern one.

It is definitelly worth to spend a day there!
