Has anyone been? Is it worth the trip?

by windmilljumper

Getting a car for 2 days in Denmark. Need to get some help on worthwhile places to go. We like the off the track kind of places along with the "must see". We were wondering if anyone has been to Ribe and is it worth the trip.

ribe is the oldest and one of the prettiest towns in denmark.
a very recommended place to visit if you are in denmark.

Did you read any Shakespeare when you were in school? He use Helsingborg Castle as a part of a play. We went there and took the tour. Then you can take a hydrofoil across to Sweden for a few hours. Also Hans Christian Anderson's home town of Odense is nice. You might google these places and see what you think.
best of luck

just a small correction.

helsingborg is the town you take the ferry to in sweden.

helsingør is the town with the hamlet castle.

the towns have similar names and are both full of drunk swedes, so they are easy to mix up :Ø)

take a look at my Ribe-page, this place is wonderful, very peaceful and you may even book a room there in the "Gammel Knast" the old prison, that was turned into a modern hotel.plenty of colorful doors in the old town

Much appreciated

Haha, Claus I guess me being at VT meetings is better in Copenhagen in future as well then, rather than Helsingoer? :)))

As for "off the beaten path" places in Denmark, there are loads. I quite liked your old hometown of Fåborg :) But mainstream Roskilde is another of my favourites with its World Heritage cathedral and viking ship museum.

Ribe is still on the "to see" list. Hope to do it in May - I just went to the cyclistforbund shop for a map of Vejle Amt and thought Ribe could be a nice side trip for our "resting day".

A Denmark guide not mentioning Roskilde???

Travel Tips for Ribe

Ribe - and an oversized church

by globetrott

Ribe is a rather small town, but the church seems to be rather oversized on the first view.

But Ribe used to be capital of Danmark plenty of centuries ago and the big church was also ment for all the small villages of the surrounding area
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Its a lovely little town and well worth a visit !

Ribe - Only the nests are left

by globetrott

Its a pity that almost no storchs are left, only the nests are still on top of the buildings.
People say : a storch-nest means happiness inside the house...
-------------------------------------------------------------------- THIS seemed to have applied to this building at least :

It turned from a prison to a modern HOTEL !

Ribe - walk the small streets

by globetrott

Most of the streets have cobbled stones and are off limits for cars, as they are rather small
-------------------------------------------------------------------- That way, without any modern cars inside the streets, you even get a better feeling of beeing in the 17th century now...

Ribe doors 2

by globetrott

I wonder what happened to this door ??

Was it planed that way or did it get that way by the many of years passed by ??

Anyway, it gives a very special character to the tiny little house in one of the sidestreets, leading to the river.

MY favorite door

by globetrott

This was my favorite door - looks a bit like sundown on the ocean.

When you click on my pic, you will see this is a huge gate, wide enough to have a car go through.
And there is a smaller entrance-door in the middle.
