Travel Tips for Ribe

Ribe - home of the storchs

by globetrott

It was one of my best childhood memories :

The storch-nests on top of most houses in Ribe.
I was there in 1964 and 1965 and so many storchs could I watch in their nests and flying around
-------------------------------------------------------------------- I am afraid , that's over now !

and VT even cut off the storch's nest from my pic - UNLESS you click on the pic to enlarge it !!

Ribe - watch out for the half-timbered houses

by globetrott

Its great to see, how many of the old half-timbered houses have survived all the centuries of modernisation
------------------------------------------------------------------- Any sort of craftsmen and professionals are rather expensive in Denmark - I guess that is one of many reasons, why people rather tried to keep the old buildings, than moderizing everything...

Great doors

by globetrott

Great old doors are found all over Ribe, and most of them are kept well and repainted quite often in order to be admired by the many tourists.

Most of these doors were made in 17th-19th century.

Ribe - a door to powder your nose

by globetrott

Even the door to the public toilet looks great and unique.

Its just next to the old prison and the church - just in case you need it...

And someting that you will see all over Danmark : Toiletts are always well cleaned & free of charge !
(with a few exeptions in big cities, where homeless people would "live in the WC" the whole day, if there was no charge)

RIBE

by piccolina

Ribe is the oldest city of Denmark. It was an important place of commerce for the Vikings in the 9th century. Until about 1600 the city flourished as Denmarks most important harbour. When the river choked with sand the trade-routes changed and the city's importance dwindled. Today Ribe is only a small town, but is a very pretty place.
