Travel Tips for Ribe

Ribe - the Cathedral

by globetrott

Have a look for this great medieval church.
Its built in the middle of a large square.
------------------------------------------------------------------- Plenty of parkinglots are around the church, and just opposite the church you will find the prison " Gammle Arrest"

Ribe - den Gammle Knast - " the old prison " Hotel

by globetrott

Den Gammle Knast was the local prison, before it was turned into a modern Hotel.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- The hotel-rooms are the former cells : rather small in size, but very high rooms.

The architects built a 2-storey room with a bed to tear out of the walls, a small place to sit and private facilties as well...

...The old prisoners certainly had less comfort

Ribe - old houses, storks and a prison

by globetrott

Ribe once was the capital and biggest town of Danmark. - That was a long time ago...

...today only the oversized church reminds a bit of that time Ribe is full of these lovely old houses with a half-timbered fassade, and on plenty of them you may see storch-nests, although unfortunately storch became rather rare in recent years.
I remember my first visit in Ribe, as a child in 1964, plenty of storchs lived there.

Ribe doors 3

by globetrott

It seemed to me, that all house-owners have a certain competition umong themselves, asking : Who has the most beautiful doors.

Simply walk all sidestreets around the church in order to not miss any of them !

An enchanting town

by barrikello

Yes, Ribe is a must for visitors travelling through the Jutland Peninsula. Despite being a popular destination - and thus full of tourists - it can't be missed on one's way through Denmark. It's a place full of art and history, a town where the time seems to have stopped. It recalled me York, with its brick facaded buildings and the stunning architecture of the ensemble. The size is indeed smaller - about one tenth - but the importance in the respective kingdoms' histories and the number of masterpieces are similar. Being the town surrounded by marsken - marshes - its highlights can be seen from very far away. Storks come to Ribe in spring and they really know their business.
