More about A Merchants House

Lovely boutique hotel

by TripAdvisor Member fran78

We stayed at the Merchants House Hotel in mid-July, right during the European heatwave. Having read the reviews complaining of small rooms, noise and lack of air-conditioning, we were a little apprehensive when we were taken to a room facing the courtyard. Well, the room was lovely and large, the air conditioning worked perfectly and we had two amazing nights' sleep!! The only noise we could hear was coming from the room above (there was an over-excited child running around in the morning in the room above).
The bathroom was also very large and although I am not a fan of shower curtains (especially dark grey ones), it was clean, spacious and had everything you could need.
The breakfast was also very good (the fresh fruit wasn't great, but everything else was). The staff were very helpful and friendly and we also took advantage of the wonderfully cheap spa in the hotel, an absolute must! The location couldn't be better, it's right in the centre of things in the Old Town. And we didn't come across any stag parties at the hotel.....

Beautiful hotel, great staff!

by A TripAdvisor Member

Me and my girlfirend stayed at the hotel during easter and we were both delighted, even after having had high expectations from reading the reviews on tripadvisor.

The staff were genuinely friendly, always smiling and helpful. The room was beautiful. The sauna and relax room that could be used in private free of charge were a great feature, beautifully decorated as everything else.

Although we didn't plan on dining at the hotel restaurant, the lunch we had there left us hungry for more, and dinner there was awesome. Very tasty and exciting dishes, good service and a nice atmosphere. The frozen drinks in the icebar were also great and neatly served.

As we left we tried to think of something, anything, that wasn't good about the hotel, but failed to do so.

Lovely location

We stayed here for three nights last weekend and it really is a great location - couldn't be better. You walk out of the front door, turn left and you're on the Old Town Square. The hotel itself is really nice and classed as a 'boutique' hotel. Our room was in the courtyard and was so small, you literally opened the door and the bed hit you. In fact, we had to put our cases in the bathroom, as there wasn't a spare inch on the bedroom floor for them. I would recommend that when you book you ask for a spacious room, (and not a corner courtyard room) as they are all classed as different prices. We paid €150 per night and felt that we didn't get the room we paid for - I would expect a much bigger room for that kind of money! The staff were OK, not the friendliest or most helpful in the world and seem to take it personally if you complain about anything. We ate in the downstairs restaurant one night and definitely wouldn't return - we waited an hour for our meal and nobody came near us to tell us what was happening - they just ignore you!! Still, breakfast was brilliant and the Ice Bar's cocktails are to die for. I would recommend a restaurant called SISALIK on Pikk Street - it was one of the best I have ever eaten in - staff were lovely and the food was incredible - the fish particulary was delicious and very, very reasonable prices. I would certainly return to Tallinn - a beautiful city and actually would stay in this hotel again, but would be wary and more vocal about what I expect in the room!!

Lovely hotel- airconditioning an issue in the heat

by TripAdvisor Member burgo1804

We stayed at the hotel in mid June for 3 days- booked through Hotel.com and no problems with that at all- very smooth and efficient. The Hotel itself is lovely and well positioned- we had a room on the ground floor onto the courtyard which is well insulated from noise.
The major problem was that we arrived just as the weather in Europe had just warmed up and like most of Europe this hotel didn't seem as well set up forwarm weather- the room didn't appear to have airconditioning and got vfery stuffy with the windows closed so they had to be opened which let in the noise from the courtyard and perhaps a few would be uncomfortable about the then very easy access to the room- although any intruders would have to come through the front door so should be seen by the doormen.
The room was a reasonable size- no problems there and well set out, good shower and bathroom. My only other issue- and again it seemed a European thing- why don't hotels have a top sheet under the doona/Duvet- sometimes it is too hot for the duvet but I want some covering- we found this everywhere we went this trip.
We ate breakfast in the hotel and it was quite good and included in the tariff- the staff at breakfast were probably the best in the hotel as far as friendliness went, a few have commented on the reseved/cold nature of the satff- we didn't find this much of an issue but I think the Estonians are naturally a little reserved from my 3 day experience- the women are however quite beautiful. Free internet access in the lobby was useful as well.
Overall a lovely hotel I would recommend to most- Tallinn is as picturesque as you could want and this hotels location is great. Maybe check if going in the hot part of the year that you get an airconditioned room- I think some may be, it would be superb outside the hot part of the year. Seem odd for an Australian to complain about the heat but all our hotels would have refrigerated airconditioning in rooms.

Good place to stay in Tallinn

by TripAdvisor Member agtanker

My wife, 7-month old son and I spent 2 nights here at the end of Jun 2006 while we were visiting a friend who live in Estonia. The hotel itself is nice and our room was huge--great for our son to crawl around in. We were given the Courtyard Suite and the room had a double (full-sized) bed in 1 room and a seperate sitting area in another. Both rooms were equipped with flat screen TVs with more channels than I cared to count and the bathroom even had its own Sauna.

The hotel was centrally located within a hundred meters or so of the central square and old city hall. The down side to this was that Taxis and other cars could not drive right up to the hotel, however at worst, you have to walk a hundred meters or so to get to the hotel's front door. The staff was great and even let us check in early and then leave our bags after we checked out so we could go and explore a few more areas before we left.

We did have a few issues with the hotel overall such as the lack of air conditioning, the sewer gas smell right outside of our room during the heat of the day, and the small selection at the breakfast buffet. The staff did tell us that the hotel is working on installing air condidtioning, but it had not been added to our room yet.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and we would certainly stay there again, but I think we would ask for another room next time.

The problem with boutique hotels ...

by TripAdvisor Member hwilson012

... is that your experience will depend on the room that you are allocated. Presumably those who rave about this hotel did not have the small, overheated room that we were given. What it lacked in natural light it more than made up for in early-morning noise and while it might have been described as cosy in winter it was stuffy and hot in the summer.

Great location

by TripAdvisor Member pinkjude

My husband and I spent 4 nights at this hotel in August. The location was superb but our room was far too hot and there was no air conditioning. There was an air con unit which was noisy and not properly vented to the outside wall. Our room was a bit disappointing as it was a deluxe double and we did pay a lot for it. It was drab and dull. It also overlooked the courtyard and being on the ground floor was overlooked by diners there.

The staff however were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was the best we had during our trip. We had drinks in the ice bar but when we were there we were the only guests so it lacked atmosphere. The outside pavement part of it however was great and well used.

Overall an enjoyable stay but my advice would be to try and view the room first.
