Luxurious rooms, budget prices

With limed wood floors, the large rooms offer a great view of the old town. Just 10 minutes walk from the main square, this hotel was a bargain.

Not 5 minutes walk ....

...from the Old Town, with a view of Toompea and conveniently close to the tram, the Hotel Skane was in an ideal location. They gave us a huge room ( and a tiny single for our daughter) on the first floor. With very pleasant and welcoming staff, efficient heating and effective double glazing that helped keep the place both warm and quiet, a perfectly adequate breakfast, plenty of hot water, spotlessly clean (though with rather iffy drains - keeping the bathroom door shut in our room was a necessity) all at a most reasonable rate, we were well satisfied with our stay here.

Unique Quality: The hotel is a typically Estonian building - a long wooden building, painted green and white. It was built as a hotel in the last years of the 19th century, served other purposes during the Soviet years and has now been refurbished and restored to its original purpose.
Wide passage ways and spacious landings open onto rooms of varying sizes - there are some singles available as well as family rooms, and some that are specially fitted for people who suffer allergies to the more usual furnishings and fittings found in hotels. Given that this is a budget hotel - booking via the internet we paid less than $40 a night for each of our rooms - we felt it certainly offered us value for our money. Prices do seem to be on the rise in Estonia though, so you will need to check the current tarriffs.

It's only a short walk through the park to the entrance into the Old Town..

Nostalgic building

Our first impression was: this is not a clean hotel. This because to the design of the floor. Rooms at the street side are noisy because of the tram station.
We changed to room 301. Nice big room with a double and a single bed. Own bathroom with shower and toilet.

Unique Quality: Hotel has no elevator. It is an old building but the rooms are renovated. I think it was some military building because we took the wrong stairs and saw an old room named commandant .25.
The hotel has some nice details like the stairs to the third floor.
Breakfast is served in buffet style in the restaurant with bar.

Midrange hotels near city centre

by jmusta

Hi everyone!

This is the first time my husband and I will be coming to Estonia. We will be visiting his family and seeing the wonderful sights.

We are trying to find a medium price hotel in Tallinn. We were looking at Hotel Skane, but my mother inlaw is worried about walking at night in the Old Town.
Is she just paranoid about crimes happening at night?

We stayed at the hotel Central which was good value and very close to the Old Town. I'm not sure what there is to be worried about in the Old town. Tallinn is the gem of the baltics, we certainly loved it.

Could not fault the Scandic St Barbara just off te Old Town, never a problem in Tallinn day or nght.

Just a lovely place.

You could check out hotel Viru (www.viru.ee). It is right next to the old town, and a nice basic hotel. Clean and friendly.
When I visited Tallinn last autumn, I spent couple of hours talking with a local man that worked for the city of Tallinn. He said that unfortunately it is not wise to walk around the city at night. Of course the main streets with a lot of people are safe, but one should not go to narrow and empty streets.

But Tallinn is a great city. I'm sure you have a great time, no matter where you stay. If you have too much time, you can easily visit Helsinki. Just couple of hours away with a ferry.

Thanks everyone for their input.

We've decided on Hotel Skane. After a spending time explaining to my mother inlaw that we won't be walking on abandon streets at 2 am and as long as we are with groups of people, we won't be mugged or attacked.

I'm going to have as much fun as I can god damn it!
