An untypical hostel
This is the first time I gave a hostel a rating of five satisfaction points (and until now, it is the only one). Why? Because it really never gets boring there. During the day, it can happen that friends from the hostel staff (mostly with some international background) to hang out at the hostel and join the group for a beer or two. It happens quite often that staff members will invite you to go with them on a pub tour through Tallinn’s old town. Old Town Backpackers is (unlike many other hostels) not a place for loud and drunk people - just a place where international travellers meet to have fun and show the required respect to each other.
Unique Quality: This place is not a typical hostel, but surely one of the greatest places in the world to stay. The house at Uus 14 is just an appartment where the living room (6 beds) and the only sleeping room (4 beds) have been turned into dorms. The kitchen is adjacent, but not really separated from the living room. Toilet and bathroom are separate from each other, both well-kept and clean. In some guides and sites, it is said that there’s a party atmosphere in the hostel, but that’s perhaps not the best description. It was more like a big sit-in where all the guests were sitting around a table, talking, drinking tea, coffee or beer. TV is running most of the time in the background, but it looks like sometimes DVDs are rented for a cozy movie evening. But on the other side, it is also respected if someone staying in the living room wants to go sleeping.
