A hostel in a place called Ontika east from Tallinn, quite near the Eastern border... Cosy place with excellent service, fair prices!
The place is owned by many people, and religious societies own a great deal. The spirit is palpable... and good night sleep is guaranteed by good spirits of the place! Theme: HostelComparison: about averageDirections: Ontika in the eastern Estonia... Ontika is a little place, just take few miles from the main road. If you have a good map, you can't miss it! On the way to the highest waterfalls in Estonia.

I loved it! (In a moment you'll find out why I am wierd!) It was just like staying Soviet era hostel! The food was disgusting (but edible., Try the "ryba", it was caught in Lake Ladoga around 1986) and the rooms were designed by Stalin himself! The staff were freindly however, and my smattering of Russian went a long way. (It is owned and staffed by Russians) You cant bring back 1980's Soviet Estonia, but this place comes darn close!!
Pool, views, you're having a laugh, eh? There is a Bar inside, that welcomes you and your Krooni. This hovel looks more like an ex-KGB interrogation centre than a hotel. It is located in what can only be described as some kind of 'sniper alley' miles away from the Old Town. The staff pride themselves on service with scowl, the room had not been decorated since the war (not sure which one), the carpet was full of holes, the window was taped up, and the curtains did not cover the window at all - a nice touch, allowing us to really enjoy the almost 24 hour a day daylight at that time of year. Even when we were trying to sleep at 4:30am for example. Also the bedding felt as if it were alive and probably hadn't been washed since the war (again not sure which one), the toilet would not stop flushing, and the shower tray was strategically positioned so that water ran AWAY from the plug hole - at least it had one though - the sink didn't which was incidentally falling from the wall). Suffice to say we left and did not stay the second night we had booked. Do NOT stay there under ANY circumstances. It even has the nerve to describe itself as 'comfortable accommodation in the Centre of Tallin'. Comfortable to whom? lice? One word is appropriate: Demolition.
Its unique alright, but has NO qualities whatsoever. Theme: HotelPrice: US$20-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: least expensiveAddress: Luha, Tallin, EstoniaDirections: Run down 'inner' (i.e. nowhere near) City. Just hail a taxi and ask for Sniper Alley, and they will know where you mean.

Our stay at this hotel was very amusing, it was very clean and quite friendly and was a good base for discovering the island of Saareema. I would certainly reccommend it to others because of the above and also because of rigidness of the proprietor. This was very much the way of the Estonian culture which gets my sense of humour. For example there was no washing clothes in the room but we did it anyway, I know that I I knew he would have been really upset. We found it easy to meet people there and met a nice French coupe who travelled with us by car around the island and some Canadians.
The breakfast was excellent and it was great to hear the proprietor's first hand knowledge of living under Stalin and his take on the differences between the Nazi's and the Soviets. He had some great stories to tell. His kitchen was almost a library filled with books dating back to before the 1st Soviet occupation in the 30s onwards. He would be most keen to share his knowledge with you and answer questions about hs collection. About the house itself, well its better than anything I've ever lived in, as the older generation may believe that they live in shanty towns. Its a hotel with a difference and well reccomended by us. Decent price 4 what u get. Wow, this place is literally steps from the hottest clubs and cafes in the city….the staff is super nice—which is important when you are an American of color there…really clean and bathroom with super pressure…nice…real nice….had a mini-bar which I stocked with vodka from the 24 hour liquor store across the street…that move offset any addition cost of the hotel over hostels Theme: HotelPrice: US$120-180 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: 10 Suur-Karja StreetDirections: middle of Old Town

Very pleasant small hotel (23 rooms) right in the Old Town. Room was quite spacious and clean. A very basic, complimentary buffet breakfast is served in the lobby; there's also a small bar when you can pick up a drink before retiring for the night. They provide 24 hour security..during the day, there's a guard at the enterance. At night, you may have to buzz to be let in. Unfortunately, I did not work up the courage to experience this, but there's a sauna available on the top floor!
