Sleep in Tartu
I will go in Tartu this summer, so I reserved a room in an hostel.
The hoste is the Peepleri 14. Someone knows this hostel? Is near the city center? Is a safe area?
thank you very much
RE: Sleep in Tartu
Although Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia, it is relatively small. Therefore although the house is not located in a very centre, it is only about 5-10 min walk to the centre. Pepleri 14 is Tartu University student residence hall. It was renovated in 1999 and 2001. Tartu is a very safe and friendly neighbourhood overall. See more information about the Pepleri 14 residence hall http://www.kyla.ee/eng/
Travel Tips for Tartu
Stay a while
Most people see Tartu as the second city of Estonia, and in many ways this is what Tartu is. However, it is worth a visit of more than a few hours as a side trip from Tallinn. It might be difficult to too much time in Tartu, but there is enough to warrent an night or two, and Tartu is a great place to use as a homebase for exploring the wonders of Southern Estonia. If you have the time, stay a while, enjoy the slower pace of life, walk through the markets, walk along the river, spend an afternoon sitting in the parks that are all around the city. There are so many things I will remember about my time in Tartu, the cold winter and pleasent summer, bonfires on the beach, quiet afternoons walking through the city, afternoon and evening teas at the many cafes, and countless other memories that are still coming everyday.
Kissing Students Fountain
The sculpture and fountain "The Kissing Students" located at the Town Hall Square, has become a symbol of Tartu, erected in 1998, it was conceived by Mati Karmin. Well, it is the favorite places of students and tourists :-)
Flasku & Tasku - The Flask and the Pocket
Two modern buidings on the edge of Tartu's centre got those funny nicknames: Flasku (the Flask) and Tasku (the Pocket). The tall slender building is shaped just like one of those brandy flasks that for example hunters take with them in the cold season.
"Tasku" is a modern shopping mall just like any other shopping mall in the world. "Flasku" is an office building. From the top floor one has a nice view over the town, or is supposed to have. You can go up to the top floor by lift. The lift is on the side towards the new suburb of Annelinn. The view of the town centre is on the opposite side. It is a question of good or bad luck whether the door to the corridor is open or not - we were unlucky.
Obviously my picture in photo 4 (with spring foliage, taken in September, ha ha) is a fake; it was taken from the big photo on the wall opposite the lift. Just to give an idea what we missed...
I assume that on a workday during normal office hours chances are better.
Good food in a nice atmosphere
Ülikooli Kohvik simply means University Cafe. This place used to be a student's cafe, albeit one of the better ones in Tartu. It is situated in an old building just next to the main building of the university.
Light, wide open rooms with an ambience of an expensive cafe make eating more interesting. Prices are alright, the service is a little bit slow. But then again, the building is huge and you can eat on several floors...
The ground floor is the actual student's cafe, it serves cheap and good food. Further up, there's a restaurant and a bar with a more distinguished atmosphere.
Ülikooli Kohvik also offers some cocktails. Spaghetti with Bacon were great (upper floor), on the ground floor most of the food is good
the main square.
the main square in tartu is very nice and surrounded by historic buildings.
there are a few statues on the square worth looking at and when i was there they had even put up a big statue of an ice poodle.
