Bus/Train from Riga to Tartu

by Carletto76

Dear VT friends.
I'd like to go to Tartu from Riga on the 13th of August. I took a look at Eurolines.lv site, but there seems to be just one bus every day at 19, arriving at 23.15. I was looking instead for a morning connection. Do you have any advice? (also trains would be ok)
Thank you very much in advance!

Hi

if you want morning connection, then you should take eurolines bus from Riga to Pärnu (search for connected lines)
when you are in Pärnu, you will take a bus to Tartu (not eurolines any more) and you can see the schedule http://www.bussireisid.ee/
have a nice trip!! :)

Just take the train, it goes through the most beautiful bit of Latvia so you get to see a lot.. well with the bus too.. but trains in lativa cost near to nothing.

Thank you to all! ;-)
Thanks to Merje I have now the bus timetable, can someone of you tell me the trains timetable too? I cannot find any connection in Estonia on the German DB site, it seems they don't have Estonian stations on their huge database...
Thank you in advance!

I can't remember what the latvian train page was called.. just google on it. And from there see Riga to Valka(Valga) and from Valga see Estonian trains from www.edel.ee to Tartu. Simple as that.

"Kiss Me Again": Roasted Garlic Bread

by Kathrin_E

The tasty Estonian variety of garlic bread is popular as a starter or snack, it is great with beer. Many pubs and restaurant offer it. I also got it in a private home.

Probably this dish is so simple that a recipe does not exist. Slices of dark brown bread are cut in stripes and roasted in butter - I assume garlic butter. It can be eaten 'like this' without further extras but the garlic sauce is a plus. It was a cold white sauce, think sour cream, aioli, or similar; I think any of those would do. The roasted bread stripes are rubbed with a fresh garlic clove and then dipped into the sauce and eaten.

A pub in Tartu names it Suudle mind veel! ("Kiss me again"), LOL...

I recommend everyone in your surroundings to share this snack, otherwise... they will regret it.

Historic Peipsi Barge

by GuntherHK

The Emajõgi-Peipsi Barge is historic wooden trading vessel which has sailed in Estonian inland waters more than 600 years. Last of them sailed in the middle of 20th century.
However, in 2004 people interested in the rebirth of this ancient vessel and after 2 years on April 29 (2006) new barge was succesfully launched on the River Emajõgi. Current barge in named "Jõmmu" and it open for public.
One hour sailing on River Ema cost 90 Krones (May 2010).
Check timetables and availability on website (only in Estonian).

Historic Peipsi Barge is a Estonian tourism innovator 2008.

Home of the Gangsters

by AgentJX about Riista Pubi

Here in the heart of Tartu is a pub with Al Capone and other gangster figures staring down on the diners. Like any good pub, beer comes first and foremost here, and it comes in many verities from many countries and of course in a verity of different sizes. From the outside the building looks a bit strange (it is located next to a casino in the base of a shopping center and has a big multicolored window. However, the inside is typical bar. Riista probably has the biggest selection of beer in Tartu, and all of a very reasonable price. In addition, the food is worth eating. It might not be top of the line culinary delectables, but the portions are filling and for the most part tasty. They probably do desserts and beer snacks better than their main courses. However, the warm sandwich is a good choice as are their soups (if they have it the pureed vegetable soup is very good). In the summer they have one of the best outside seating areas in Tartu. It is in a sunny spot and one on the main pedestrian roads in the city center. Since I talked about the food above, I will talk about about the bar. Like many places in Tartu. The pub is also a good place to go for a night life. Riista frequently has bands playing for a small cover charge. I was lucky enough to stumble across a band playing there called Colorado. Since I am a Colorado native I had to go. They put on a pretty good show!

Big romantic park

by sorenf

Behind the Town Hall and the university lies a big park that is very much worth a visit. It has a "Kissing Mountain", an observatory, an old hospital, a church ruin and lots of other stuff to look at. Take a look at the pictures I have put with this tip.
