Kalin Hotel: Excellent Stay

The town of Lazaropole is the highest town in Macedonia, surrounded by miles of forest, with supposedly the cleanest air in all of the Balkans. If you want to come here, Kalin Hotel is the only choice in town – so it’s good that it’s so nice.

Rooms are simple but pretty, clean, and comfortable. As a single on a fully booked weekend, I had a smaller room around the back. The host apologized that it didn’t have a view, but I’m not sure what room would have a view (hard to explain the location). You’re not coming here for a view from the hotel anyway. You’re coming to do outdoorsy things like hiking or mountain biking or hunting and then sit on the patio and drink coffee with everyone else in town, or eat a delicious meal at the restaurant. The restaurant is quite good. I had “hunter’s chicken” for a late lunch (superb), and a delicious breakfast of byrek and tea (included in room rate).

Service was fine, if relaxed (meaning check-in and -out took a little time), but I have no complaints. There are no extra amenities (pool, sauna, etc.) to make it a resort-type destination, although there are conference facilities. When I was there only one guy spoke English (or anything other than Macedonian), but he seemed to be there at all hours. Since you’ll be driving to get to Lazaropole, be sure to park somewhere in the main square (things elsewhere can be driveways that don’t look like driveways).

I’m pretty sure the other VT review for this hotel was created as advertising, but it really is a nice hotel in a beautiful place.
