Staying with Pavel
The Grebnos Stone-house Apartments is by no means a full service or luxurious hotel, pension or guest house, but it's charming nonetheless. It's basically the personal project of the interesting owner Pavel...an Ohrid native who spent 25 years in Holland before returning to his hometown. He rebuilt an old house, in the old historic part of town, according to the stone house tradition of Ohrid. He lives in one part of the guesthouse and leaves the other part of the house to his guests. It's interesting and nice for the stone architecture and the GREAT views from the balcony - which is large and comfortable. The place is charming and rustic, and the homey feel is quite nice for those who like that sort of thing, but will be disappointing for those who expect a full service place with luxurious appointments. I was disappointed by my bathroom which while architecturally interesting, was fairly small and had one of those - 'the shower is the whole bathroom' kind of things. There are however other rooms with much more luxurious bathrooms, just ask ahead when you're booking. There's a kitchen with a coffee machine and hot water for tea, but you won't have a full breakfast if you need that to get you going in the morning. There's free wifi, which is nice and you can while away a few hours catching up on email out on the balcony, which offers a glorious view and is quite spacious
Unique Quality: The view from the terrace is beautiful and perhaps the best thing about this accommodation. It's a large terrace that overlooks the lake and town below.
Also, the owner Pavel Pop Stefanija is a unique and friendly fellow who likes chatting with and hanging out with his guests (only those who want to). We spent a fun pre-going out hour chatting and drinking rakija with Pavel. Good medicine for my laryngitis despite what doctors would say.
Finding the place was very challenging as no one would tell us where it was, and even the taxi driver seemed clueless even though it was in the end about 200 meters away. Metodi Patce is one of the main stone streets that runs up from the center of town. Grebnos is poorly marked and is at the top of the hill on the left as you come up from the street pictured. (It's not the establishment in my street photo.) If you can't find the place, Grebnos says to call them on their mobile phone number :+ 389 70 331 706 and they'll come to get you for free from any location in Ohrid or from the Ohrid airport. Cool. We tried giving the number to the taxi driver, but he wouldn't call. And he had no clue :)

Is it possible to visit Ohrid, coming from Albania with an Albanian rented car?
What about the border crossing formalities?
As we'll visit Albania in August, we'd appreciate also to visit the Macedonian side of the Ohrid lake...
Thank you for your help.
Re: from Albania with a rented car
by MacedonianUK
You can cross the border at Sveti Naum or K'afasan near Struga.
You will have to chek with rent-a-car agency ,are you alowed to cross.
Some will let you some don't.
FYI you will have to pay car charge on the exit from AL, wich is €1 for every day you had the car in AL, also on your return to Al from MKD €10 for visa payable at the border.
If you dont want to take car into MKD, then Bus or furgon to the border, and local bus onwards to Ohrid.
Podgradec in AL will furnish you with furgon, but you can get the bus on the Tirane-Skopje rute, via Ohrid, Thetovo to Skopje.
Have a good trip.
Valentina
P.S if you need more info on road trip around AL,drop me e-mail.
I have done it few times, but with my own car.
Travel Tips for Ohrid
Old house at the city centar
by Olgeorg
This is Lake Ohrid in Macedonia, where I spent a wonderful weekend ! I think you might find some information about this lake interesting:
Lake Ohrid is the oldest lake in Europe and one of the oldest lakes in the world. Formed tectonically between 4 and 10 million years ago, the lake is situated in karstic, or limestone bedrock.
Lake Ohrid is located in the southwest part of the Republic of Macedonia, on the border between Macedonia and the Republic of Albania. Approximately two-thirds of the lake surface area belongs to Macedonia and one-third belongs to Albania.
The water of this lake is characterized by its special colour and reaches a summer temperature of 24'C. Its singular natural conditions have made possible the survival of life forms from the Tertiary Period, owing to which Lake Ohrid has often been called a museum of living fossils.
Because of its unique and precious flora and fauna, found nowhere else in the world, the lake is under the protection of UNESCO.
Grapevines
by agmoose02
As you wander around Ohrid old town, take the time to enjoy the plentiful grapevines growing around the city and cultivated around homes like ornamental plants. It is no wonder, considering how many grow within the city itself, that much of Macedonia's excellent wine is produced in the region.

by Pijlmans
Diving Center AMFORA lies next to the museum at the Bay of the Bones near campsite Gradiste.
You can do sightseeing of the underwater archeological diving locations in lake Ohrid.
I've not done this myself, just picked up their flyer at the museum.
